Raheem Sterling is the Prem’s Player of the Month… despite Eden Hazard topping official Twitter poll

A Premier League panel has crowned Raheem Sterling Player of the Month for August…despite Eden Hazard topping the league’s own official Twitter poll.

The Prem invited supporters to choose the best player of the first few weeks of the season and Chelsea midfielder Hazard received 41 per cent of the vote.

Manchester United’s Antonio Valencia was second with 34 per cent and Manchester City winger Sterling third with 17 per cent.

But a panel still decided to give the award to Sterling, who has turned his form upside down since the arrival of new manager Pep Guardiola at City.

Hazard, like Sterling, struggled for consistency last season but is back at the top of his game. The Belgian matched Sterling’s two top flight goals, but created more chances (six) and had a superior average pass accuracy of 83 per cent.

Sterling has made one assist.

However, he’s managed to scoop the gong for the first time in his career ahead of Hazard, Hull City’s Curtis Davies and Manchester United defender Valencia.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard topped the fans’ poll

His award was met with a load of complaints on Twitter.

Sterling paid tribute to Guardiola for helping him turn his form around last month, saying:

“The manager’s been in the game a long time, won stuff, worked with young players, worked with great players, and he knows how to get the best out of his players.

“He’s been a massive help. Not just for me, but the other players as well, the whole team

“It’s good to have a manager that not just talks to me, but makes the whole team feel really welcome, makes everyone feel they are all one, whether you are starting or not.”
