Real Madrid star Gareth Bale names his greatest ever team-mate… and it’s not Cristiano Ronaldo

GARETH BALE has chosen his greatest ever team-mate – and while you might have guessed it is not Roman Pavlyuchenko, he hasn’t picked Cristiano Ronaldo.

Most would have assumed the Real Madrid ace would have gone for his current colleague CR7, who is one of the world’s best players.

Welshman Bale has won two Champions League trophies alongside Ronaldo, and the Portuguese has also scored the small matter of 371 goals for Real – but that is not seemingly enough.

Ex-Spurs winger Bale was asked by shoe brand Foot Locker the ultimate question: “Who is the greatest player you have played with or played on the pitch?”

Bale answered: “For me the greatest player is Ryan Giggs. He was my hero growing up and is a legend in world football. It also helps he’s a fellow Welshman.”

It is strange given the age difference between the two, meaning they only played alongside each twice for their national side, including a 3-0 win over San Marino in 2007 when both scored.

But Bale’s love of Manchester United legend Giggs is well documented – when asked by a Welsh schoolkid before Euro 2016 which former Wales player would he most like to call on, Bale, 26, gave a very similar answer.

He said: "I’m not too old so I don’t know too many. But for me it would be Ryan Giggs, he was my hero growing up and it would be great for him to play on an international stage.”

Ronaldo could be hurt by Bale's snub - and he may have cause to be annoyed at team-mate Dani Carvajal too, who recently claimed Bale will take Ronaldo’s place as king of Real Madrid after the duo's signing of bumper £18million deals at the Bernabeu.
