A non-league match was abandoned yesterday for one of the most bizarre reasons you’ll ever hear.
After just 13 minutes, the referee at Holmer Green’s Spartan South Midland Premier League match with Edgware Town decided to call the whole thing off… because a fan was moaning.
The Edgware Facebook page posted a message, which was later removed, saying that their fan hadn’t been abusive but had been constantly complaining about the ref’s decisions.
On 13 minutes the referee apparently told officials at Holmer Green that if the fan wasn’t kicked out of the stadium, he would call the game off.
When the fan went nowhere, he decided to abandon the match.
To make things more ridiculous, Holmer Green were 1-0 up at the time, so calling off the game was a pretty strange way to punish the moaning Edgware fan.
The match report on the Holmer Green website stated that they offered a qualified official to run the line if the assistant referee took charge of the match, but were told the game had already been abandoned, so it could not be restarted.
Holmer Green also said the referee had not asked them to remove anyone from the stadium.
According to the Holmer Green site, the clubs will now await disciplinary action from their respective County FAs, with Holmer Green in Buckinghamshire and Edgware in London.
After this, the league will decide whether or not to replay the match.
