Rio Olympics 2016: Michael Phelps lashes out at reporters who’d arrived to greet and congratulate the hero Olympian after his flight home from Rio

OLYMPIC legend Michael Phelps was thoroughly unimpressed when an excited American journalist tried to interview him as he landed home in the US.

The awkward encounter was caught on camera by Pheonix’s 3TV news, who were streaming their chat with the record-breaking swimmer live to the studio.

But the film crews continued to compliment the athlete as he walked away

The spontaneous interview tanked as Phelps gave journalist Marc Liberman the brush off and refused to answer any of his questions.

It all happened as he walked through baggage reclaim at Sky Harbor Airport, Arizona, after a 16-hour flight home from Brazil.

He told them: ‘If you want to do an interview you can contact my agency’

In response to their questions, the unamused 31-year-old said: “I’m not answering any questions.

“If you could give me that space while I try to get my family home, and safe, I would appreciate that.

“If you want to do an interview you can contact my agency. I appreciate you guys coming, but I’m trying to get my family home safe and that’s what matters the most.”

To make this even more cringey, the film crew continued to call out: “Congratulations though Michael, great job!” as the 6ft4 athlete quickly marched away.

The failed interview has gone viral – and no one can decide if it was Phelps, or the TV crew, who were out of line.
