Rio Olympics 2016: Super? Saturday night was alright – but for Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford there were medals of different colours

IT was billed as a repeat of the astonishing Super Saturday of London 2012when Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford all stormed to gold.

But this time round it was a case of medals of three different colours.

There was gold for Farah in the 10,000 metres, heptathlon silver for Ennis-Hill to a staggering young talent and bronze for Rutherford in one of the greatest long jump finals of all time.

As it turned out it was not to be in a like-for-like repeat of 2012.

That was, is and may always be the greatest hour in the history of British athletics - and on home soil.

The track trio were not on their own in making Saturday more than a Brit of alright.

In the pool, Adam Peaty was again the hero as he and his Brit team-mates grabbed a silver in the men's 4x100 metres individual medley relay.

They were only beaten by the greatest swimmer of all time - retiring Michael Phelps - and his band of American brothers.

And in the velodrome Laura Trott, Elinor Barker, Joanna Rowsell-Shand and Katie Archibald claimed the gold medal and the world record in the women's 4km team pursuit.

Trott also became the first British woman ever to win three gold medals - aged only 24.

Then Callum Skinner and Jason Kenny guaranteed themselves a gold and silver as they qualified for the final of the men's individual sprint - just days after winning the team sprint event.

They then went on a trip to McDonald's ahead of their gold medal ride.

Elsewhere, Britain claimed gold and silver in the rowing - with the men's eight claiming the top honours after the women bagged silver behind the United States.

And even though they did not win gold medals, Andy Murray and Justin Rose gave Britain reasons to for cheer on Sunday as they set up gold medal chases in the tennis singles final and the golf.

Then there is the prospect of the British women's hockey team remaining unbeaten after pipping rivals USA to a 2-1 win and guarantee themselves top spot in the group.

If you stayed up till 4am to watch the athletics - then you're probably thinking the same as cyclist Barker, who just won her first ever Olympic gold medal:
