Rio Olympics 2016: Team GB defied expectations in Rio but how much did each of their medals cost?

TEAM GB are back in Blighty – and what an Olympics Games it has been on a golden fortnight in Rio.

With a record number of medals resulting in their highest ever finish – and beating China into third – it’s been a record-breaking Games in nearly all disciplines.

But with UK Sport funding the athletes for the years leading up to the Games, how much did each medal cost to win in five of the top sports?

Athletics

STARTING on the track, GB enjoyed a decent haul of seven medals, including Mo Farah's historic double gold in the 5,000m and 10,000m.

Shrouded in controversy before the Games - with the Russian doping scandal dominating headlines - the action on the track took over and it was a terrific spectacle throughout.

Jessica Ennis-Hill narrowly missed out on gold and there were some super efforts by the relay teams to bag late gongs on the final two days of competition.

Boxing

AT LONDON 2012 GB dominated in the ring, so the three medal haul in Rio on the face of it is a little disappointing.

But Nicola Adams was once again superb in defending her title whilst Joe Joyce can count himself very unlucky not to land a gold medal after a closely fought final bout.

Joshua Buatsi won a gutsy bronze but there was heartbreak for Muhammad Ali as he crashed out at the first hurdle to Venezuelan Yoel Finol.

Cost per medal: £4.6m

Cycling

The Team GB pair won five golds between them

TEAM GB's bread and butter is the velodrome - and their 12 medals was a fantastic return which even bettered that of London.

After a poor start on the road, with just a solitary bronze, but they came alive under the roof and were headed by golden couple Laura Trott and Jason Kenny.

£30m was pumped into British cycling but the rewards were certainly reaped into a stunning Games.

Cost per medal: £2.5m

Gymnastics

WITH an expection of around three medals, to come home with SEVEN was an incredible effort from GB's talented gymnasts.

Max Whitlock lead the way with a double-gold winning performance which seemed to surprise even himself - whilst the team event's were ably contested.

Bryony Page even took silver in the trampoline, something only possible through investment.

Rowing

STEVE REDGRAVE cemented rowing as a GB speciality when he completed his incredible five-gold haul in Sydney 2000 - but Rio wasn't the best showing on the water.

Receiving a whopping £32m investment, the five medal return was definitely a couple down on what the team will have wanted before the Games.

But Helen Glover and Heather Stanning's incredible victory was one of the moments of the Games.

Cost per medal: £2.5m
