But Vervoort has an incurable spinal disease which causes her immense pain.

Vervoort said: “I will stop my career after Rio.

“I started thinking about euthanasia. Every day it hurts, some nights I do not sleep and after ten minutes’ sleep I have to train.

“I train very hard even if I have to fight against my disease. I hope to finish my career on a podium in Rio.”

Euthanasia is legal in Belgium with the consent of three doctors. Vervoort has already planned her funeral.

She added: “Everybody sees me laugh with my gold medal but no one sees the dark side. I suffer greatly.”
