THE singles in the 41st Ryder Cup are underway at Hazeltine and America currently hold a three-point lead.

But how many points do Team USA need to win the cup, and what do Europe have to do to retain it?

How many points are needed to win the Ryder Cup?

Europe or USA need 14.5 points to win the cup outright.

There are 12 singles matches, each worth a point.

America currently have 9.5 points while Europe have 6.5 from the previous two days' play.

What do Europe need to retain the Ryder Cup?

The two teams play for a total of 28 points, so to retain it Europe need to reach 14 points overall.

Matches that end in a draw earn half a point.

What happens if it is a draw overall?

If it finishes 14-14 then Europe will retain the cup because they won it last time.

There is no individual play-off to determine a winner.
