Salford Red Devils boss wants no repeat of their miraculous Super League survival act

IAN Watson does not want Salford to go through the dramatic way they stayed in Super League again.

The Red Devils survived in the top flight with a miraculous comeback at Hull KR in last year’s Million Pound Game.

Gareth O’Brien’s extra time drop goal gave Salford a 19-18 win, relegating Rovers in the process.

But boss Watson would be more than happy if he was watching two other sides battle it out at the end of the 2017 season.

And he revealed that O’Brien has received some playful reminders of what he did not do in that fateful game.

He said: “The Million Pound Game was a spectacle you don’t want to be in.

“As far as we’re concerned, I’ll be happy not to see or speak about it ever again.

“It’s a situation we got ourselves in through no fault of our own, then we did with some of our performances in the Qualifiers.

“We need to focus on it being a clean slate this year and build on the opening part of the campaign as a group.

“It’s barely been mentioned, other than people having a dig at Gaz O’Brien as he’s golden boy because he kicked the goal – they keep reminding him he also missed three conversions!”

Salford hope for a much calmer 2017

Salford, who suffered a six point deduction last year after breaching salary cap rules in previous seasons, have already received a double injury blow.

Ben Murdoch-Masila and Josh Jones may miss the start of the season against Wigan because of knee and hand problems respectively.

And he is waiting for the results of scans to determine the extent of a knee injury sustained by youngster Jake Bibby in yesterday’s friendly at Halifax.
