Sam Burgess unlikely to face punishment despite landing huge punch on David Klemmer as Australia thrash England

SAM BURGESS lashed out and punched David Klemmer following Matt Gillett’s try for the Kangeroos.

But the England skipper is very unlikely to face punishment as the daft Rugby League rulebook managed to strike again.

Put simply, Burgess, 27, would be banned if he did that in the NRL in Australia.

However, because it was an international match, he is set to avoid any penalty.

And the fact rugby league as a sport can have different rules for the same situation is wrong and needs sorting out fast.

The incident was referred to the video referee but no further action was taken.

When asked about the punch, Burgess said: "I’m pretty sure you saw what happened.

"It’s a physical game."

That is true and it can be one of the best in the world.

However, with incidents like this, the game I love must stop giving itself problems.

Burgess added: "We let ourselves down in crucial moments.

"We missed touch twice, it's a big momentum swinger, but I'm really proud of my team for their effort but we have to work hard if we want to get to where we want to be.

"There have been some great efforts throughout this tournament.

"We'll regroup and look forward to next year together."
