Sergio Garcia plays with irons and woods after Masters champion breaks his putter at the Dell Technologies Championship

SERGIO GARCIA had a major meltdown at the Dell Technologies Championship.

The Masters champ damaged his putter after slamming it onto a sprinkler head following a fluffed eagle attempt on the short par-four fourth hole in the third round at TPC Boston.

As the loft was altered, under Rule 4-3b he could not use the club again and the Spanish ace, 37, then switched between a three wood, his driver and an iron to putt out for the rest of the round.

Although Garcia did hole the birdie putt from 13 feet, he then slipped out of contention with a four-over-par 75 that left him on two over.

American Justin Thomas, the USPGA champ, roared into contention with a 63 that moved him to 12 under.

Garcia will still head through to the third leg of the US Tour’s end-of-season FedEx Cup in Chicago in a fortnight.

But his hopes of being in the top 30 for the Tour Championship in Atlanta have been hit.

At The Open in July, Garcia injured his shoulder after lashing out at a gorse bush on the fourth hole at Royal Birkdale.

HAYDN PORTEOUS carded a final-round three-under-par 69 to win the  Czech Masters.

The South African, 23, finished 13 under — two shots ahead of England’s overnight leader Lee Slattery. After 14 missed cuts in 16 events earlier in the season, he said: “It’s been a really torrid time — this is amazing.”
