Spanish swimmer incredibly stays on his block and loses World Championship final to hold his own minute’s silence for Barcelona victims

A SPANISH swimmer held his own minute’s silence to honour the victims of the Barcelona terror attacks.

14 people died and over 100 were left injured when terrorists targeted the popular Las Ramblas area of the city and then the seaside resort of Cambrils.

Fernando Alvarez was due to compete in the 200 metres breaststroke race in Budapest at the Masters World Championship.

He had requested that each competitor hold a minute's silence before the race but his plea was rejected by the International Swimming Federation.

So Alvarez took matters into his own hands... by observing his own minute silence whilst his competitors went for glory.

As the gun went off, Alvarez pointed to the heavens as his opponents dived into the water.

He waited the full minute before swimming his own race but later claimed the feeling was better than winning gold medals.

He told local media: "They told me that it was not possible [to have a minute's silence] because neither a minute could be wasted.

"So I started a minute later. But I do not mind, I have a feeling worth more than if I win all the gold medals in the world."
