Steven Gerrard: MK Dons contact former England and Liverpool captain over manager vacancy


STEVEN GERRARD has been in contact with League 1 side MK Dons over their vacant manager’s role.

The 36-year-old Liverpool legend is set to leave MLS side LA Galaxy in December, and it is not clear if he will retire from playing.

But if he takes the job at Stadium: MK, he will succeed fellow Scouser Karl Robinson, who last month left after six years in charge with the club 21st in League 1.

Robinson left the Dons in October after six years in charge, as their poor form from their first-ever Championship season last term continued when they were relegated back to the third tier.

It comes after Frank Lampard, who has also just left the MLS with New York City FC, ruled out becoming the Dons’ boss as chairman Pete Winkleman seeks a star name to take the Dons to the Premier League.

Gerrard is England’s fourth most-capped player, and left Anfield in 2015 after 17 years in the first team, playing 710 times and winning eight major trophies.

He said he has “options on and off the pitch” since announcing he is to leave the United States before the end of the year, having been linked with moves to both Celtic and Newcastle United.

Gerrard is currently pursuing his Uefa A coaching licence - the second-highest qualification offered in the professional game.

Despite being one of the most disliked clubs in England due to the way they were formed out of the defunct Wimbledon in 2004, they pride itself on the football it plays and has its emphasis on their youth academy - which the likes of which holds England and Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli graduated from.

And the Buckinghamshire side do have a history of giving people their first management job in football, giving Robinson the role at the age of just 29 in 2010.

While they are not adverse to hiring big names, as the likes of Roberto di Matteo and Paul Ince have both been in charge there too.
