Sunderland 0, Barnsley 1: Ethan Pinnock breaks Black Cats’ hearts with second half header

SUNDERLAND’S hope of back-to-back Championship wins hit the skids when Ethan Pinnock headed Barnsley in front after 47 minutes.

Yet again Stadium of Light fans suffered severe disappointment as the Black Cats failed to follow-up their morale-boosting victory at Nottingham Forest.

Pinnock rose to nod home a Ezekiel Fryers cross from close range.

Bryan Oviedo hit the post before the break as the Black Cats tried desperately to build on some improved form.

Oviedo slammed a promising free kick against an upright having earlier firing another set piece just over.

Lloyd Isgrove went close for Barnsley, while Brad Potts had a right-footer blocked after good work by Liam Lindsay.

Sunderland’s Aidy McGeady and Callum McManaman also tested the home defence in the opening half hour.

As they chased the game Sunderland allowed Barnsley’s Adam Hammill time and space for a right-footed shot from outside the box. But he was high and wide.

In the 83rd minute a desperate looking Sunderland resorted to long range efforts and from one Joel Asoro missed out but from a narrow angle.

Then, with just moment to go, McGeady headed wide when well placed.
