The veteran forward will not be joined by Jack Rodwell depsite him apparently being declared fit yesterday.

Wahbi Khazri has overcome a sickness bug but only makes the bench.

As Moyes still seeks his first league win, the former Manchester United boss is feeling more optimistic about his squad size.

He said: “We’ve just started to get some of the seniors back, and we’re waiting on people like Fabio Borini to come back.

“We will get Jack Rodwell back who has been out for the last couple of games so we are getting a lot closer to having a full contingent in the squad now.

“Jermain [Defoe] trained back today. We’re hoping he will be okay.

“He had a kick to the calf and we hope he will be fit and ready to go tomorrow.

“Wazzi [Wahbi Khazri] had a sickness bug. He’s come back and trained a couple of days so hopefully he will be available for the squad as well.”

Patrick van Aanholt is likely to be thrust straight back into first team action but Moyes admitted Victor Anichebe is not ready yet.

He added: “We’re short of strikers. We need him [Anichebe] because he is a Premier League player and he can give us some experience.

“I’d like to give him some minutes in games. He’s not too far away.”

Borini, Sebastian Larsson and keeper Vito Mannone are all still out.
