The most talked about goals and sporting moments of 2016 on Twitter… and how Aston Villa are a bigger club than Chelsea


ENGLAND crashing out of Euro 2016 at the hands of tiny Iceland was the biggest moment on Twitter this year.

The shock scoreline resulted in 128,000 tweets per minute after the final whistle.

Rather unsurprisingly, Leicester’s confirmation in winning the Premier League – as Chelsea held Tottenham to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge – was second with 107k tweets per minute.

The Foxes also boast the most-retweeted post in sport this year.

The club’s tweet of the Premier League trophy, reading simply “Leicester City. Champions of England”, received just shy of 396k retweets.

Muhammad Ali’s official account remembering the boxing legend was next with 257k.

The Greatest died aged 74 of a septic shock – a mental condition which occurs when organ injury leads to low blood pressure – surrounded by his family.

After a summer transfer window of speculation, the Swede finally announced he was going to Old Trafford on June 30.

For Chelsea last year was a season to forget.

The Blues endured a chaotic start to the campaign which ended in Jose Mourinho being sacked.

They also ended the season as the worst champions in history.
