Tiger Woods hopes to be fit for Masters as he wins putting game on Good Morning America

TIGER Woods has won his first trophy for four years…  a putting competition against a US TV host on Good Morning America.

Former world No1 Woods – who is struggling to be fit in time for next month’s Masters – looked overjoyed as he beat TV host Michael Strahan, who is a former Super Bowl winner, although his winning but came after the timer had ended.

The 14-time Major winner appeared in a suit on breakfast TV to promote a new book to mark the 20th anniversary of his spectacular Masters victory in 1997.

However Woods, 41, is unlikely to be fit to compete for what would be his fifth Green Jacket as he is crippled with a chronic back injury.

Woods is currently ranked world No742 and has not competed since February 2 when he pulled out after shooting 77 in the Dubai Desert Classic, complaining of back spasms.

Asked if he would be competing at Augusta next month, Woods replied: “God, I hope so. I’m trying. I’m trying everything to be able to get back and play.

“I love that event. It’s meant so much to me in my life. It has so much history and meaning to me, I’d love to get back.”

He added: “I need to get back physically. The mind is sharp…. I just need to get the body willing to do it.”

He said he will be at Augusta for the Champions Dinner on Tuesday April 4 but it not sure he will be able to play.

He told USA Today: “I have a chance to play. I’m trying everything possible.”

However, instead of practicing for the Masters, Woods is on a publicity tour to promote his new book.

The last of his 106 professional victories came at the Bridgestone Invitational in August 2013.

He last won the Masters in 2005, and his last major championship victory was the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.
