Tottenham ace Christian Eriksen leaves Denmark’s World Cup camp ahead of birth of first baby

CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN was nowhere to be seen in Denmark’s pre-World Cup training session today as he travelled home for the birth of his first child.

The Spurs midfielder announced his wife Sabrina Kvist Jensen was pregnant in December, and he was granted leave as she approaches the birth.

Eriksen, 26, is Denmark’s main hope for progression to the knock-outs in Russia, with the tournament kicking off in just over a week.

It was the White Hart Lane favourite’s hat-trick against Ireland which sealed the Danes place in Russia, in a 5-1 play-off second leg win at the Aviva Stadium.

Head coach Age Hareide allowed his star man to travel home but will hope Eriksen is not missing for too long, as his side gear up for their opening World Cup game against Peru on June 16 in Saransk.

They then travel to Samara to face Australia five days later, before rounding off their Group C action against France in Moscow on June 26.

Eriksen comes into the World Cup off the back of the best season of his career, scoring 14 times in all competitions as Spurs recorded a third-place Premier League finish.

The Dane also registered 10 league assists, tied-most for the club with Dele Alli.

In 2016 Eriksen admitted he often struggles to divide his time between Spurs and wife Jensen, with the intensity of playing for Mauricio Pochettino’s team taking control of his life since moving from Ajax in 2013.

“You have to learn how to cope physically and mentally, but I can handle the pressure and the demands because I live seven days a week for my job,” he said.

“That is very tough for my girlfriend. Of course I would like to go out in the city with her and friends, but it just doesn’t fit in with playing in England.

“Every three or four days I have to perform at the highest level and I have big ambitions and dreams to be a success here.”
