USA international defender Yedlin will then undergo a medical before the move is finalised.

The 23-year-old, who is primarily a right-back but can also play in midfield, spent last season on-loan at the Magpies’ bitter rivals Sunderland.

He made 23 appearances for the Black Cats as he helped them secure Premier League survival at the expense of Newcastle.

Yedlin joined Spurs from MLS side Seattle Sounders in August 2014 but remained on loan in the US until the following January.

He played his only league match for the north London side that April before his switch to Wearside last September.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez has also held talks with Brentford's midfielder Alan Judge, but may delay his move for the Irishman until January as his contract runs out.

Tim Krul is also expected to complete his loan move to Ajax after Ireland international Rob Elliot signed a new contract extension.

Meanwhile Newcastle's young Swiss defender Kevin Mbabu has joined BSC Young Boys on loan for the season.

Benitez was confident of sealing a £9m move for Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost but the Dutch international seems set to snub Toon for Sporting Lisbon.
