Tottenham want Jamaal Lascelles but face competition from Chelsea for Newcastle defender

TOTTENHAM will fight Chelsea for Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles, according to reports.

The Toon skipper impressed last season to help his promoted side stay well clear of the drop zone.

And the Evening Standard claims the London rivals are both eyeing deals for Lascelles, 24, this summer.

Spurs are likely to sell contract rebel Toby Alderweireld as he enters the last year of his deal.

Manchester United are trying to secure a move for the Belgian international, while Chelsea have also kept an eye on his situation.

In their search for replacements, Lascelles is on Mauricio Pochettino’s watch list.

Toon are adamant they will not sell their captain, who is happy at the club.

But with Rafa Benitez looking to bolster his squad this summer, St James’s chiefs could change their stance if an offer over £40million comes in.

Ajax prodigy Matthijs de Ligt is another option but United, Juventus and Barcelona would provide stiff competition.

On the speculation, the 18-year-old told Tutto Mercato: “I’m not in touch with anyone yet.

“Of course, it’s a real honour to be associated with some big clubs but it does not change for me, I just have to continue to play well.

“I hope I can grow as much as possible and that’s why it’s important to play every week at high levels.

“Who would I choose between Juve, Barcelona and United? It’s difficult, they’re all great teams.

“We must think about it, understand what is the best step to do. At the moment I do not know, I’m on vacation and I can think about it.”
