Treacherous US Open course at Oakmont Country Club claims first victim

THE ‘hardest golf course’ on the tour is already wreaking havoc before the US Open starts tomorrow.

The caddie of American amateur qualifier Chris Crawford, who is playing in his first major, broke his ankle after falling into one of the 210 bunkers at Oakmont Country Club.

And the unfortunate bagman did it while Crawford, 22, was playing a practice alongside world No1 – Australian Jason Day.

Day was just about to play a shot on the sixth hole when poor caddie Bill Heneghan slid down a grass slope into a bunker right behind the PGA Championship winner.

No matter how much pain he was in after hearing (and feeling) the ‘crack’, the caddie did not forget proper golf etiquette, suppressing his cries of agony and wanting Day to play on.

But Day was having none it, rushing to the aid of the stricken man and helping him out of the bunker.

Day later tweeted his best wishes to Heneghan, wishing a speedy recovery.

Day was at the centre of his own dramatic US Open collapse last year.
