UFC 205: Former champ Chris Weidman looking to prove ‘cheaters never prosper’ against Yoel Romero

FORMER UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman says he wants to prove that clean fighters can prevail by beating Yoel Romero at UFC 205.

Romero tested positive for a banned substance in an out-of-competition test conducted by USADA earlier this year.

And after an appeal process, the former Olympic wrestling medallist had his suspension reduced after it was revealed he’d taken a contaminated supplement.

Regardless, Weidman says he wants to make the Cuban wrestler pay for his indiscretion as he looks to book himself into a world title fight in 2017 with a win on Saturday night.

Speaking about what’s firing him up ahead of the bout, Weidman said: “It’s not just one motivation. there’s many of them,”

“He’s an undefeated guy in the UFC. Some question mark fights, but he’s undefeated.

“So competition-wise, I’m competitive. I want to go out there and beat this guy.

“There’s his failed drug test, I don’t like that. I want to make him pay for that. I feel like cheaters never prosper, and I want to show that.”

If Weidman can get a decisive win at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night there’s a good chance he’ll be installed as the next challenger to Brit Michael Bisping’s UFC middleweight title.

And that, combined with the historical significance of fighting on the UFC’s debut event at the iconic venue, has Weidman laser-focused ahead of the contest.

“Obviously the implications are I’m fighting for the belt after this, so the sky’s the limit.” he said.

“I’m fighting for (a shot at) the belt at Madison Square Garden. Fighting for the first time ever at this historic event, it’s a motivation.”
