UFC Belfast: Victory over Kwak pays the bills for Welshman Brett Johns

UNDEFEATED bantamweight Brett Johns made a little bit of MMA history when he became the first Welshman to compete – and the first to win – in the Octagon, thanks to his unanimous decision win over Kwan Ho Kwak on the preliminary card.

Toe to toe: Johns and Kwak exchanged strikes on the feet throughout the contest, but the Welshman had the edge

Johns dominated all three rounds, mixing up strikes with takedowns to run out a shutout winner on all three judges’ scorecards.

After the bout the Welshman joked to Dan Hardy that UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby should give him an easier bout next time around, before getting overcome with emotion and breaking down in tears in the middle of the Octagon.

Takedown king: Brett Johns was able to take Kwak to the mat almost at will throughout the bout

“It was a bit of a barnburner,” said the elated Welshman backstage after the contest.

“It was a tough fight, don’t get me wrong, but all of my fights get tough but I just dug deep and got another win.

“What a fight to come into it! I’m happy fighting Kwak, it was a tough fight, undefeated guy.

Emotional interview: Brett Johns chatted with Dan Hardy before breaking down in tears

“I’ve got the best team in the world, why shouldn’t I beat guys like that?

“The Welsh fans are amazing, they’re the reason why I’m here. I’m very thankful.”
