QUITE a few football fans were caught cold as Storm Emma ruined their plans on Tuesday… but one American Wigan supporter who travelled 5,000 miles was left devastated by the Beast from the East.
Great Britain is currently being battered from all corners by the deadly storm.
That has caused a number of matches to be postponed by the big freeze.
Unfortunately for Utah native Will Jones that included his beloved Latics, who he has supported since meeting a fan at uni in 2012, in action at Bristol Rovers.
But the late cancellation was made even worse by the fact that he had travelled over from the States just to be in attendance.
Speaking to the Wigan Post, he explained he had been fearing the worst, but he only discovered the “brutal” news after landing.
He said: “I was disappointed, but I had known since last week that there was a good chance it would get called off, so I was prepared a little bit.”
Jones’ misfortune soon went viral after he tweeted: “5,000 miles to see Wigan and game called off that’s brutal.”
And one of those to read his sorry story was Wigan chairman David Sharpe, who quickly offered Jones the chance to go watch training today and to meet the players.
He wrote: “Sorry to hear that Will…..but are you in the north west tomorrow? If so would be great to have you in at the training ground to watch training and meet the squad?”

Unfortunately, that offer had to be turned down due to geography, with Jones replying: “I’m in London Sharpey but no worries I’m just a normal supporter. Looking forward to Blackburn Sunday. Thank you.”
But during his chat with the Wigan Post, he let slip that Latics ace Max Power was his favourite player.
And the club moved swiftly to ensure that the star would present him with a signed shirt prior to the League One promotion clash against Rovers this weekend.
Jones was understandably delighted, and he shared his joy on Twitter: “Absolutely overwhelmed at the moment.
“Big thanks to @DavidSharpe91 @LaticsOfficial for the kind suggestions it’s just one game I’ll be saving my singing voice for Sunday.
“Cannot imagine supporting any other club what a place Wigan is.”
