US men’s curling team beat Sweden 10-7 to win shock gold medals… but receive wrong gongs

THE US men’s curling team beat Sweden 10-7 to win the country’s first Winter Olympics curling gold medals – however not everything went to plan.

After being presented with their medals USA soon realised that they had been awarded the wrong gongs, as it read: “women’s curling gold medal.”

The win from Team Shuster, led by John Shuster, came after skip Shuster hit the biggest shot of his life to earn gold for the United States.

Both sides were tied after seven ends but USA pulled away in the eighth after scoring a five-point stone.

The Americans were cast as underdogs going into the game against Sweden, having lost 10-4 to the Swedes in the group stages.

The US have been consistent in Pyeongchang, recording five wins in nine round-robin matches, including a shock semi-final win over Canada.

Team USA had only won a bronze in men’s curling since the sport was reintroduced to the Games in 1998.

“We’ve played our best when our backs were up against the wall,” Tyler George, the USA vice skip told CNN.

“We took it to another level this week. Usually we’re fighting and scrapping to get into the playoffs but for five days we were the best team in the world and we did it at the right time.

“We always knew we had it in us, but to do it when it matters most is what I’m most proud of overall.”
