US Open: Lee Westwood looking out for number one with Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer

LEE WESTWOOD is hoping to draw inspiration from playing with two other former world No 1s as he again bids to end his Major hoodoo.

The Englishman’s runner-up finish in the Masters made it nine top threes so far, easily a record for any player without a Major to his name.

But as he tees off alongside Luke Donald and Germany’s Martin Kaymer, Westy can take encouragement from the fact he can still compete with the best at the age of 43.

He said: “It’s a really good draw. Hopefully, we’ll be able to feed off each other, especially if one of us gets on a bit of a roll early on.

“The Masters was huge for me in terms of confidence. It’s been nice to follow it up with a few more decent performances.

“A few doubts do start to creep in when you haven’t been contending in the big events for a while.

“It’s going to be a real grind and you’re going to have to be very strong mentally to cope. But I feel fresh and sharp.”

The five-time Major winner repaid $1million to authorities last month after a friend was found guilty of insider trading.

Mickelson was alleged to have used a money-spinning tip to clear a gambling debt.

Another associate has been jailed for money laundering, reportedly including $2.75m from Mickelson to cover betting losses.
