USA, Mexico and Canada to unveil joint bid to host 2026 World Cup

THE USA, Mexico and Canada are launching a joint bid to host the 2026 World Cup – when the competition jumps from 32 to 48 nations.

The Confederation of North and Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) says it will make an “historic announcement” in Manhattan on Monday.

The bid was anticipated before Donald Trump became US president – but his anti-immigration plans cast doubt over it.

But the longest he can stay president is eight years.

The venue for the 2026 Cup will be decided in 2020 but it seems CONCACAF are happy to go ahead with their bid.

Europe and Asia are barred from bidding for 2026 because they will have hosted the previous two tournaments.

And South America is thought to be keen to host the centenary event in 2030.

So CONCACAF is well placed to bid, especially as African nations might struggle to fund such a huge venture.
