Veteran Fernando Torres lands one-year Atletico Madrid contract as Barcelona re-sign playmaker Denis Suarez for £2.7m

FERNANDO TORRES admits he’s over the moon after landing a new contract to stay at Atletico Madrid.

The ex-Liverpool and Chelsea striker has returned to form during a second spell with his boyhood club and scored 12 goals in 44 appearances last season.

Torres – who linked up with Diego Simeone in January 2015 for an 18 month loan spell from AC Milan – saw his Serie A contract expire earlier this month.

And reports in Spain claimed that despite helping Atletico reach their second Champions League final in three years, Torres was in danger of missing out on a deal due to Simeone’s interest in Diego Costa.

But the veteran has now realised his dream after being handed a one-year contract by Atletico, explaining that he was thrilled to be continuing his trophy-laden career at the Vicente Calderon.

Torres said: “I’m delighted to continue at home, the only place where I ever wanted to be, and it has finally come true.

“[I’m] happy to be here. I never had doubts about where I wanted to be during this process in which we didn’t know what was going to happen. In the end, what matters is that I have achieved what I was waiting for.”

Meanwhile, La Liga rivals Barcelona have made former player Denis Suarez their first signing of the summer transfer window.

The playmaker returns to the Nou Camp for just £2.7million after joining Villarreal last year, and has penned a four-year deal with a release clause worth £42m.
