The former England captain is deciding whether the time is right to end his Premier League career by leaving Everton with one year still left to run on his contract.

And his base in the US capital is the Trump International Hotel, one of the chain owned by the current President of the country.

Rooney, 32, is understood to be staying in one of the executive suites in the luxury hotel, which will set you back £1,050-a-night.

During his time on the east coast of America, Rooney has held a series of meetings with DC United officials to thrash out the terms of his deal.

He paid a visit to the club’s soon-to-be completed new Audi Stadium and also checked out the club’s training facility.

And the belief is the trip has been a positive one with the striker and DC officials optimistic they are getting close to reaching an agreement.

One of the stumbling blocks to the transfer happening is Everton are yet to fully decide whether they are happy to sanction it.

While the Merseyside club have been happy for the player to make the trip across the Atlantic for talks, there is still conflict behind the scenes over whether to let him leave the club.

Chairman Bill Kenwright is believed to still want Rooney to remain at Goodison Park, maintaining he can still have a role to play in the Premier League.

But other senior members of the staff at Everton feel his impact on the pitch is one the wane and it would be better to get his £300,000-a-week salary off the wage bill.

DC United are offering £12.5million to buy him, but part of that deal would still see Everton having to contribute some of his wages.

With owner Farhad Moshiri assuming greater control, the likelihood is the club will decide to let Rooney leave as they look to rebuild for the new season under a new manager.

Should the deal go through, Rooney would have to wait until July 10 for it to be officially ratified – the date the transfer window opens in America.
