WAYNE ROONEY will be joining the Huddersfield of the MLS if he signs for DC United.
That is the view of US legend Alexi Lalas.
Everton striker Rooney, 32, is closing in on a £300,000-a-week move to the Washington club, who are bottom of the Eastern Conference with just one win in seven.
Former MLS star Lalas, 47, told talkSPORT: “He’s going to a team that, right now, is not strong, has not been strong and has not spent a whole lot of money.
“You’re talking about a Southampton or Huddersfield; the type of teams that are struggling right now.”
DC United, who were formed in 1996, are opening a 20,000-seater stadium – Audi Field – in July.
They massively struggle to sell out their 45,000-capacity Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium with average crowds of just 17,000 fans last year.
Lalas, who was LA Galaxy chief when David Beckham joined in 2007, added: “[DC United] are looking for some kind of pillar, if you will, to build for the future.
“The stadium changes everything, so I think they’ve been keeping their powder dry until this stadium comes online.”
Former England and Manchester United captain Rooney would be the marquee signing DC United are looking for.

He is Everton’s top scorer with ten goals this season but has been dropped lately by boss Sam Allardyce.
Lalas said: “Everyone knows he’s not the player he was 10 years ago, and they know they’re not going to get the Wayne Rooney of even five years ago.
“But they feel this is the guy that can put the ball in the back of the net.
“They will have done their due diligence and figured out, from a physical perspective, what he is and what he is and what he isn’t.”
