Wembley forced to put up safety nets because bodged roof could fall in

WEMBLEY bosses have put up safety nets in case the roof falls on fans’ heads.

The precautionary measures have been implemented after a part of the stadium was found in the stands during a non-match day, the Telegraph reports.

Problems date back to the stadium’s opening in 2007, when staff found roof panels had been wrongly installed.

An FA board decided safety measures were needed as early as 2013.

Wembley’s builders, Multiplex, were held responsible for the botched roof at a legal hearing.

The FA admitted putting nets up saying the safety of the fans was the most important factor.

The firm’s insurance was due to repair the panels but Tottenham Hotspurs moved into the stadium this season, delaying work.

Other problems at the national stadium include water leaks in the Royal Box – the private area where Prince William has enjoyed games.

Chief executive Martin Glenn and chairman Greg Clarke are keen to sell the National Stadium to Fulham owner Shahid Khan in a deal worth £1billion.

Khan has said he wants to build a retractable roof, with an estimated cost of around £200 million – a quarter of the entire cost it took to re-build the new stadium.

Fans have reacted furiously to the news fearing the American millionaire will rip the heart out of English football and introduce NFL to the stadium.

The FA would retain control of Club Wembley but are yet to clarify how they would operate the venue.

But FA bosses face a Commons grilling by MPs over the planned sale.

Sun Online has contacted Multiplex did not respond to requests to comment.
