The image appears to show a thick strip circling just below his elbow, with another smaller one above his wrist.

The work was done by Hanumantra Lamar in Hart’s hometown.

Hart posted a message on Instagram: “Great to go back to Shrewsbury and get some world class body art @hanumantra Awesome work #kaammoonnnn.”

And the artist’s website appears to shed some light on what may have been behind Hart’s decision to go for the thick ‘blackwork’ blocks of ink.

Paulo DybalaSergio Ramos, Wesley Sneijder and Oscar all have similar tattoos to Hart’s bands.

Lamar explains: “Blackwork is a tattoo choice, it’s a lifestyle and it’s a philosophy, believing that less really is more and understanding that we should not be afraid to stand out in world full of people trying to fit in.”

Hart certainly had little chance of avoiding standing out in West Ham’s opening Premier League clash.

The England stopper, 30, saw four goals fly past him to leave Hammers bottom of the table.

Romelu Lukaku netted a double before Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba rounded off the scoring.

The display dampened Hammers’ pre-season optimism but Hart posted a post-match message to lift fans.

It read: “Hard work is the answer. Thank you so much for the travelling support, we will make it up to you on Saturday. Very proud to play for your club.”

Hart and the Hammers next face a trip to Southampton on Saturday.
