Ayew fired 12 goals for the Welsh club in 34 appearances in 2015-16.

He left in 2016 for the Hammers for a then record club fee of £20.5million but has managed only nine goals in 43 outings.

According to the Telegraph, Swansea thought they had sealed a deal for his return but came unstuck when West Ham demanded more.

It remains to be seen if the club’s supremo Huw Jenkins will up the ante.

West Ham are obviously angling for their money back especially as they are contemplating selling to a potential relegation rivals.

It seems clear, though, that Hammers’ manager David Moyes doesn’t see Ayew fitting into his long term plans, even though Andy Carroll could be out for three monthd with a fractured ankle.

The striker has suffered from a number of injuries since moving to East London, beginning when his away debut at Chelsea lasted just 35 minutes due to thigh trouble.

If Swansea do go back in for Ayew they will have to beat the club record of £15.5m which brought Borja Baston to the Liberty from Atletico Madrid in August 2016.

They face Liverpool on Monday night with new manager Carlos Carvalhal claiming he has a plan to upset Jurgen Klopp.

“It’s David versus Goliath, but surprises do happen and we will be ready to prepare a surprise on Monday,” he said.

“They have strong points, but a team that lets in three [as they did against Manchester City] has weak points also.”
