West Indies star Andre Russell banned for a year after being found guilty of doping offences

ANDRE RUSSELL, one of the biggest hitters in world cricket, has been banned for a year for a doping offence.

The West Indies all-rounder failed three times in 2015 to notify drug testers of his whereabouts.

That is considered equal to a failed drugs test under WADA guidelines.

Russell, 28, was charged in March last year but it has taken more than ten months for the Jamaican anti-doping authority to impose the ban.

The man who styles himself as a cool dude known as ‘Dre Russ’ helped the Windies to glory over England in the World Twenty20 Final in India last April with the violation hanging over him.

He has since also played in the Indian Premier League, Caribbean Premier League, Big Bash and T20 Blast with Nottinghamshire.

Before Tuesday’s hearing, Russell told the Jamaican Observer: “It’s been stressing and hard playing cricket with this at the back of your head.”

He is considering an appeal.
