THE Manchester City midfielder has defended himself against claims his new tattoo is “sickening”.
But what is the controversy surrounding the 23-year-old, and why did the inking spark such outrage? Here’s what we know so far.
What is Raheem Sterling’s new gun tattoo?
The midfielder’s new gun tattoo, which depicts a M16 assault rifle pointing down towards his right foot, drew mixed reactions.
Variations of the gun have been used in most major conflicts since the Vietnam War.
Anti-gun campaigners were quick to describe it as “disgusting” for appearing to promote gun violence.
Responding to the criticism, Sterling revealed to his 3.6million Instagram followers that the gun was actually a tribute to his dad, who was shot dead when Sterling was just two.
Posting while he trained with the England team in Burton, Staffs, he wrote: “When I was 2 my father died from being gunned down to death.
“I made a promise to myself I would never touch a gun in my life time, I shoot with my right foot so it has a deeper meaning N still unfinished”.
What have Mothers Against Guns said?
An anti-gun campaigning mum whose son was shot dead accused Sterling’s new tattoo of being “an absolute disgrace.”
Lucy Cope, 63, of campaign group Mothers Against Guns, said she thought it was “sickening” that the midfielder was showing off the tattoo to his Instagram followers.
Speaking before Sterling explained the reason behind the tattoo, she said: “This tattoo is disgusting… Raheem should hang his head in shame.
“It’s totally unacceptable.”
Piers Morgan joined in, tweeting: “Get that gun off his leg.”
