Who is Anthony Johnson? What you need to know ahead of UFC 206


UFC 206 was due to be headlined by a light-heavyweight title fight between champion Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson.

The bout is now off due to a training injury suffered by the champ Cormier, the Rumble will have to wait until next year to avenge his defeat by DC at UFC 187 in 2015.

Who is Anthony Johnson?

Born in Dublin, Georgia, Johnson was born in 1984 and attended University on a wrestling scholarship.

Johnson became a junior college national wrestling champion.

Aged 20, he started working as bouncer until a friend suggested with his wrestling background to give Mixed Martial Arts a go.

What is Anthony Johnson’s background?

Like Daniel Cormier, Johnson comes from a University wrestling background.

The Rumble is in his second stint fighting under the UFC banner after struggling to make weight as a middleweight and finally being released by the organisation in 2012.

He has also competed at welterweight before moving up to the light heavyweight division where he has proved to be a huge success.

When did Anthony Johnson make his debut?

The Rumble made his UFC debut at UFC fight night 10 in 2006.

Johnson knocked out Chad Reiner thirteen seconds into the first round.

The quick knockout was made to look even better as Johnson took the fight on less than a weeks notice replacing injured Steve Bruno.

What is Anthony Johnson's UFC record?

The 32-year-old has fought 27 times winning 22 with five defeats over a 10 year career.

The Rumble is a knock out specialist with 17 wins coming by the big KO.

He has only been stopped once in his five losses, the other four defeats were by submission.

When is Anthony Johnson's next fight?

Difficult to say when his next fight would be as his focus has been on beating Cormier.

That fight is now off and he doesn’t want to fight anyone else and is not interested in an interim bout with Gegard Mousasi.
