Inaugurated in 2008, the Singapore Grand Prix was Formula One’s first ever night race.

Why is the Singapore Grand Prix held at night?

The main reason for holding the Singapore Grand Prix at night was so an Asian race could be broadcast at lunchtime in the UK.

As the race is held on a street circuit, it could be properly illuminated during the evening, with demand for tickets remaining high.

And the Singapore Tourism Board were also more than happy to promote their city by night.

What time does the race start?

As per the strategic goal of holding a race in Asia at a time that suits European markets, the Singapore Grand Prix will begin at 1pm on Sunday, September 17.

That’s 8pm local time.

Who has won the most Singapore Grand Prix races?

Sebastian Vettel is the dominant driver in Singapore, having won it four times.

Graeme Lawrence won the race three times – 1969, 1970 and 1971 – before it was discontinued in 1973.

On the modern circuit, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso have the second most wins after Vettel.

Both drivers have won it twice.
