WIDNES are the latest Super League club to enter the race for St Helens star Matty Smith.
Catalans, Hull KR and Salford have all said they want the former England scrum-half on loan.
But sources say the Vikings have also entered the race.
Insiders say Salford have told St Helens that they want the 30-year-old while Hull KR are said to be ‘pushing hard.’
Saints, who SunSport revealed are set to find out if Ben Barba will stay or leave at the end of the season next month, are thought to be ready to allow Smith to leave on loan for the rest of the season.
Meanwhile, Hull are not going to repeat their trip to Australia next year – but Chris Green may head down under anyway.
Sources say the 28-year-old prop is putting out the feelers to see if there is any chance of getting a move to an NRL club.
But insiders also say the Black and Whites are highly unlikely to repeat their jaunt across the world, which they did to face Wigan in February.
Instead a European destination is a much more realistic proposition and if they head abroad, it will not be until 2020.
Other Super League clubs are thought to be considering whether to follow Wigan and Hull’s lead by taking a game to either Australia, North America or Europe.
But it is believed Hull have decided to take a raincheck on 2019 after suffering several injuries while out in Australia, where they faced the Warriors in a historic Super League game.
