And Mourinho delivered a win in his first match as United boss, with goals from Will Keane and Andreas Pereira.

Mourinho looked at 22 players after making seven changes at half-time and four more after the break.

Luke Shaw made his comeback from injury after breaking his leg last season, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan impressed on his United debut.

The £26million signing from Borussia Dortmund set up chances for James Wilson and Memphis Depay in his 45 minutes on the pitch.

He also had a glorious chance himself but blazed over Jussi Jaaskelainen’s crossbar after getting on the end of Jesse Lingard’s cross.

In the second half it was Mourinho’s subs that got the scoring going.

Keane tapped in after Juan Mata took advantage of Jaaskelainen’s gaffe and unselfishly squared to his team-mate.

Then Pereira lashed into the top corner with a volley after a free-kick broke to him 12 yards out.

Phil Jones, who has not played since January after an injury nightmare, also played the entire second half alongside new signing Eric Bailly, who got 82 minutes under his belt.
