‘Worst I’ve ever seen’ Ray Wilkins slams Chelsea’s decision to sell Nemanja Matic to rivals Manchester United

FORMER coach Ray Wilkins has labelled Chelsea’s decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United as the ‘worst’ he has ever seen.

The Serbian played an integral role during Chelsea’s two most recent title winning seasons and has hit the ground running at Old Trafford.

Matic reunited with former chief Jose Mourinho following a £40m summer switch to Manchester United on a three-year deal.

The 29-year-old kicked off his Reds career in sublime style with a man of the match display against West Ham on the opening day of the season.

He has continued to impress at Old Trafford, helping United secure three wins in the opening three fixtures.

Wilkins, who played at both Chelsea and Manchester United during his professional career, said: “It’s the worst I’ve ever seen, if I can say.

“I cannot see that for the life of me.

“You’ve got a guy here who was so paramount to Chelsea along with [N’Golo] Kante in the middle of the pitch, winning the championship with Chelsea the year before and all of a sudden you’ve sold him to one of or the biggest rival we have.

“I say we because I am a Chelsea supporter so I’m speaking from the heart.

“He’s been outstanding for us and you’ve seen in the short period there how he’s allowed Pogba to basically do what he wants.

“I just couldn’t see that piece of business at all.”

Following Matic’s shock departure from Stamford Bridge, Antonio Conte was quick to bolster his midfield options by signing England international Danny Drinkwater for a fee of £35m.

The Blues also agreed a £40m deal for Monaco ace Tiemoue Bakayoko, who is also intended to fill the void left by Matic.
