WWE step up talks to bring pay-per-view extravaganzas such as WrestleMania or SummerSlam to UK


THE WWE are stepping up talks over bringing a pay-per-view to the UK within the next few years, it has emerged.

The wrestling company are interested in taking SummerSlam, WrestleMania or one of the lesser leading shows to Great Britain.

It is understood chiefs would like to have a PPV back in London, in a stunning coup for fans this side of the pond.

The last time the WWE travelled to the UK for paid TV was for SummerSlam in 1992, which saw more than 80,000 packed into Wembley.

SunSport can reveal there have been increased talks in recent months over the idea, after stepping up the number of shows coming to our shores.

Monday Night RAW, SmackDown, and Live events often travel to the UK in London, Manchester and across the country.

WWE chief Stephanie McMahon revealed in May plans to bring Mania, SummerSlam or the Royal Rumble to the UK in the future.

The daughter of chief Vince said: “WWE always listens to our fanbase.

“The UK fans are pretty loud, pretty rowdy in a great way, and you know we are constantly evaluating that.

“Personally I would love to see it. I know it would be incredible.”

And in June the company sent out a survery asking US fans if they would travel to the UK for one of their flagship events.

The emailed survey asked wrestling supporters what cities they would be interested in going to including the capital, Toronto, New York and others.

A number of arenas in London would be capable of hosting WrestleMania including Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium, Tottenham’s new ground or the London Stadium.

But the new Wembley – which opened in 2007 – would be the favourite to host the PPV with an almost certain sell-out of 90,000.
