WWE superstars Sheamus and Cesaro open up on making their tag-team work after seven-fight rivalry turned into bromance

WWE superstar Sheamus – one half of the RAW Tag Team Champions – has revealed how teaming with “Swiss Cyborg” Cesaro has been a turning point for his career.

Before the pair began tagging in September 2016, Sheamus was already a four-time world champion, a King of the Ring, and Royal Rumble winner.

Sheamus and Cesaro have held the tag titles four times

But the team, known as The Bar, has seen the Celtic Warrior do his best work so far – and nab four WWE tag title reigns in the process.

Speaking exclusively with SunSport, he said: “I feel like since tagging with Cesaro I’ve let my guard down.

“When I look back at my career, I was always trying to be this particular ‘Celtic Warrior’ character.

“Even when I was doing promos, I was thinking, ‘How would Sheamus do this and say that?’

“I love what I do. I’m very professional, I always want to do the best job that I can. But now I don’t care as much about what other people think – whether they like it or they don’t.

“Tagging with Cesaro, I’ve just had fun. I don’t think about promos, I don’t think about backstage scenes, I just go out there and be me.”

Sheamus and Cesaro were originally on-screen rivals and competed in a popular best-of-seven series throughout summer 2016.

When the last contest ended in a draw, WWE Raw general manager Mick Foley put them together as a team – and the pair became friends and learned to function as a world class tag team.

But according to Cesaro, what played out on-screen was much like their real-life relationship behind the scenes.

He said: “From the moment Mick Foley made us a team until now, what you saw on TV is exactly what happened.

“We grew together as a team and the chemistry just evolved. Now we’re best friends – we’re like brothers.

“The fun part is that it happened in front of the fans. It was 14-month process. It doesn’t happen like that much anymore.

“I think the team is successful because what you see is what you get. This is just us.”

Sheamus and Cesaro – The Bar – at the Royal Rumble

It has indeed been a highly successful time for the superstars. Not just because of titles won, but creatively – and between the ropes too.

Last year they had a sensational feud with the returning Hardy Boyz – culminating in a match of the year candidate at Great Balls of Fire.

They also put in incredible performances against Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose – and opposing SmackDown champs The Usos.

Most tellingly, more much of last year they were relied on to have the best matches on Raw each week – in both tag and singles competition.

The duo was also part of the main event at TLC, as part of a top line feud against The Shield.

This past Sunday they defeated Seth Rollins and Jason Jordan to win the Raw tag titles for a fourth time – though Sheamus was also eliminated from the Rumble after one second.

And it’s not been entirely easy going for the pair. They each suffered gruesome-looking injuries last year.

Sheamus required 15 stitches after a ladder busted him open above the eye last March – and Cesaro smashed in his front teeth after colliding with the ring post at No Mercy in September.

Cesaro now wears braces to fix his teeth.

The Swiss superstar said: “We take care of each other. I took care of Sheamus when he had a hole in his head – and he took care of me when I had no teeth.”

“We’re extremely competitive in everything we do – wrestling, working out, whatever. We just bring out the best in each other.

“If one of us have a bad day, the other lifts him up. If one of us falls, the other picks him up. That’s how we do it. It’s just been the best.”

Sheamus added: “Since tagging with Cesaro it’s like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

“And that’s when it clicks, when you’re not overthinking stuff. We just go out there and have fun, because life’s too short.

“We just go out there, have a craic, and do our thing – and people are reacting to it because they know it’s real and know it’s legitimate.”
