Abu Dhabi: Cavendish wins finale as Kangert claims GC

Mark Cavendish closed out a strong 2016 campaign in impressive fashion Sunday, taking a clear sprint victory in the fourth and final stage of the Abu Dhabi Tour.

Racing well into the evening in the United Arab Emirates, the Dimension Data rider bested Trek – Segafredo’s Giacomo Nizzolo under the lights on the Yas Marina Formula One circuit. Sky’s Elia Viviani finished third on the stage.

Astana’s Tanel Kangert, who surged into the race lead Saturday in the queen stage atop Jebel Hafeet, finished safely in the bunch to wrap up the general classification win, with Sky’s Nicolas Roche closing out the race as overall runner-up and Lampre – Merida’s Diego Ulissi rounding out the GC podium.

Sergey Firsanov (Gazprom – Rusvelo), Yauhen Sobal (Minsk), Michal Paluta (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), Kristian House (One Pro Cycling), and Fredrik Frisson (Lotto – Soudal) formed a main breakaway that was always going to face a huge challenge on pancake-flat 143-kilometer day tailored perfectly to the sprinting heavyweights.

The escapees were never given much breathing room, with a gap that topped out around two minutes, but it took some time for the peloton to make the final catch.

Paluta, House, and Frisson dropped Firsanov and Sobel with around 15km to go, just as BMC’s Floris Gerts jumped clear of the bunch and tried to bridge the gap. Gerts caught Firsanov and Sobel, but the trio out front held on for a few more minutes. The peloton swept everyone up before long, however, with the race altogether in preparation for a bunch sprint by the time the riders rolled into the final 4km.

Dimension Data’s Mark Renshaw led the peloton through the final corner with a small gap to the sprinters winding up to speed behind, and as the quick men hit the finishing straight it was a two-man battle between Cavendish and Nizzolo. The Briton held off the Italian by a little less than a bike length to take the victory, his second of the race after he nabbed the win in stage 2.

“I’m really, really happy with that. I missed this stage last year,” Cavendish said.

“To ride around the Yas Marina circuit, it’s an amazing feeling. I couldn’t help it, I was making motor car sounds round every corner.”

Kangert rolled across the line moments later to put a bow on the overall win.

“I must say it was more difficult than it might look like because the corners were really tight. I was surprised they were so tight for car racing,” he said.

“It made the race special with the lights and the dark. In the end I was pretty tired just keeping the wheels. I can’t say there wasn’t any pressure because there was, and I felt it. I was excited to race in the leader’s jersey. It was my first time leading a professional race. I’m happy everything went well and I might be back soon to defend the title in February.”

The pro peloton will return to Abu Dhabi in just a few months as the race makes its WorldTour debut in 2017 with a new spot on the calendar.
