Photos: Double double-winners at Derby day 2

Nov 07, 2016

That's the look you get when you see your name in the results. The Derby City Cup continues to host plenty of race opportunities for the juniors. Photo: Wil Matthews The UCI 17-18 junior race once again was a race-long back-and-forth between Denzel Stephenson and Lane Maher. Photo: Wil Matthews Stephenson prevailed in the UCI 17-18 race by passing Lane Maher in the final few hundred meters and holding the advantage to the line. Photo: Wil Matthews Derek Cote arrived to his podium presentation in style. Photo: Wil Matthews Caroline Mani was back to her fast starts, leading the elite women off the start grid and onto the dirt. Mani, who just returned from Europe, would finish fifth, two minutes behind the winner. Photo: Wil Matthews Katerina Nash and Katie Compton stayed within a bike length or two of each other for the entirety of the elite women's race. Photo: Wil Matthews Less than four turns into the elite women's race, Katerina Nash was already separating herself form the field. Photo: Wil Matthews The twisty Derby City Cup forest section had riders disappearing behind trees like a cyclocross version of hide-and-seek. Photo: Wil Matthews With two options in the "BMX" section of the course, it was a bit of a risk. Some took the slightly slower line, but Caroline Mani used the jump and nearly pinched her tire on the stair. Photo- Jake Orness For the second day in a row, Katerina Nash led the elite women through the first trip across the sand, riding where others ran. Photo: Wil Matthews Courtney McFadden was in close pursuit of Nash and Katie Compton for most of the elite women's race, and claimed the last podium step in the end. Photo: Wil Matthews The familiar front trio of Compton, Nash, and Mani were together on lap two. Photo: Wil Matthews Katerina Nash battled all weekend with Katie Compton and came out victorius on both days. Photo: Jake Orness Kerry Werner is one of several riders finding more success while riding with a smaller program this season. Photo: Wil Matthews Though starting on the second row, for the second day in a row Grant Ellwood made his way to the front of the lead group in the opening laps of the under-23 race. Photo: Wil Matthews Selander made his way from the third row to the front of the field and led the way through the sand trap on the first lap. Photo: Wil Matthews Jack Tanner made up ground on the first trip through the sand pit. Tanner is just one of 18 U23 riders that started Sunday. Photo: Wil Matthews Unseasonable dry conditions and heat made the November 6 race look more like a summer mountain bike race in a dusty forest. Photo: Wil Matthews The elite men's field was led onto the dirt by Tobin Ortenblad. There were 40 starters. Photo: Wil Matthews Bjorn Selander took the holeshot Sunday. He held the lead for the first few laps before fading to 19th at the finish. Photo- Jake Orness The lead group stayed close in the opening laps up stairs. The signature limestone steps at the Eva Bandman Park remain unrivaled as the most unforgiving run-up in the country. Photo: Wil Matthews Ortenblad started at the front and stayed on the front through the first three laps. Ortenblad, current U23 champion, is in his first year with the elite men's field. Photo: Wil Matthews The battle of the day went to Ortenblad and Jeremy Powers. In the end, Powers pulled away for the second spot on the podium. Photo: Jake Orness Gage Hecht was one of several U23 racers mixing it up with the elite riders at the front of the field. Photo: Wil Matthews With three laps to go, Stephen Hyde set off on his own from the group of Ortenblad and Powers. Photo: Wil Matthews The dry, dusty course made for a great backdrop with the late-afternoon sun. Photo: Jake Orness Cody Kaiser put on a clinic, riding both sets of stairs, which seemed unrideable. He went on to finish fifth. Photo: Jake Orness Stephen Hyde put his stamp on the weekend. The margin of victory was not huge but it was more than enough for the win. Photo: Jake Orness With the sun setting behind him Stephen Hyde celebrated his second win of the weekend. Photo: Jake Orness After the podium placers, the rest of the field drifted across the line in the last light of the day. Photo: Wil Matthews Hyde, immediately post race, looked to the race clock and for the distant Powers. Hyde's next races will be in Europe. Photo: Wil Matthews Powers had a bit of redemption after a tough race on Saturday. He was in the hunt the whole race and is definitely coming back into form. Photo: Jake Orness The podium was all fun and games. Photo: Jake Orness
