Zeven: Cant outmuscles Compton to claim World Cup win

A week after the last round of the Telenet UCI Cyclocross World Cup in Koksijde, Belgium was cancelled due to extreme weather conditions, round 5 round kicked off in Germany (Zeven) for the first time in 13 years with Belgian national champion Sanne Cant (IKO Enertherm-Beobank) picking up her first World Cup win of the season.

With the course covered in frost due to near-freezing conditions, the recently crowned SuperPrestige Gavere winner battled back in the second half of the race to overpower American Katie Compton (Trek) in the final lap of the six-lap circuit to win in a time of 44 minutes 43 seconds.

The race kicked off with series leader Sophie de Boer (Kalas-H.Essers-NNOF) taking an early lead, followed by fellow Dutch rider Thalita de Jong (Rabo-Liv) with Cant and seven other riders quickly in tow. De Boer and de Jong took the first lap before Cant used her climbing prowess to claim the lead over the hills on lap 2.

Cant, who finished third in Valkenburg (NED) last month, extended her lead over the field, including fellow Belgian Ellen van Loy (Young Telenet-Fidea) in the third lap before surrendering it to a surging Compton on lap 4.

The reigning 12-time U.S. national champion and recent Pan Am winner appeared to be in control in the remaining two laps, however Cant battled back and proved too strong for Compton to hold off.

With only four rounds remaining, the World Cup moves on with the next round in Namur, the capital of Wallonie, for the sixth time in UCI World Cup history. De Boer remains in the series lead, while Cant moves into second place.
