Dean Richards confident Falcons can still improve

Newcastle boss Dean Richards feels his side can still improve despite claiming a bonus-point win over Bath at Kingston Park on Friday.

The 29-12 victory means the Falcons completed a Premiership double over Bath for the first time in 20 years.

Toby Flood finished with a personal haul of 14 points – including a first-half try – as the Falcons made it six unbeaten in all competitions at home.

Sinoti Sinoti, Kyle Cooper and Niki Goneva also crossed for the home side.

“The measure of this squad at the moment is the fact that the boys have beaten a good side convincingly and scored a four-try bonus point, but they’re still not happy,” said Richards.

“In the changing room after the match they were very critical of their own performance, we conceded two soft tries and never really got out of second or third gear, and we know there is more to come.

“Had we really hit our straps then the score could have been different and we’d have been happier with the performance, but we know we can improve and we’re determined to do that.”

Bath director of rugby Todd Blackadder said his team concededed too many penalties.

“I’m just really disappointed," he said.

"We didn’t do anything differently from the week before. I thought we started quite well but we were giving a penalty away every two minutes and we made 21 turnovers in the game. You’re just not going to win rugby like that.”
