Itoje Boost for England’s Six Nations Campaign

When influential forward Maro Itoje fractured his jaw against Harlequins in December, it seemed that the versatile Saracens man would have to sit out England’s early exchanges in their 2018 schedule.

However, just a few weeks later, the 23-year-old is back and, having taken to the field against Wasps at the start of January, Itoje must now be in Six Nations contention.

It’s a boost for Eddie Jones, who has options in all back row positions but the tournament favourites suddenly look stronger as the first round of internationals looms.

Successful Defence?

Reigning Six Nations Champions England begin the defence of their title with a trip to Italy on February 4 in what should be a comfortable opener for Jones’ squad. The holders are priced at 4/5 with bet365 in the Six Nations rugby union betting market to win the trophy again and, following an impressive set of results in the Autumn Internationals, it appears that the title is England’s to lose.

With key players returning from injury, a squad that already looks to be the strongest in the competition is further reinforced. Manu Tuilagi also returned to action at the start of the New Year and, while his return from the international wilderness may be delayed, Itoje’s comeback should be more assured.

No Surprise

When Maro Itoje first suffered that injury in December, there were fears that he would be out for around three months. That was an initial prognosis but, after the player saw a specialist, the timeframe proved to be far more favourable.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Itoje said that a four to six week lay off had ultimately been diagnosed and that he was, therefore, ‘not surprised’ to be taking to the field in such a relatively short space of time.

Boost

In the same interview with Sky Sports, the player also admitted that he wasn’t quite at full match fitness but, with plenty of club rugby between now and the start of the Six Nations, there should be enough time for Itoje to achieve 100% levels before the Six Nations gets underway.

The national coach is likely to say that he won’t underestimate any opposition, especially as Italy have frustrated England in the past but, against the weakest side in the competition, Jones may well feel he has the luxury of leaving Maro Itoje on the sidelines before bringing him back into the squad to face Wales at Twickenham six days later.

It’s been an impressive two years in the game for a man who made his debut in 2016 and has since grown to become one of the most important players for club and country. Itoje has been at the heart of back to back Six Nations and European Cup triumphs and he played his part in the British and Irish Lions squad that defeated New Zealand last summer.

Eddie Jones will be wary of Maro Itoje’s early return but will quietly see the news as a huge boost and one that strengthens England’s claims for a third successive Six Nations triumph.
