Russell’s rapid rise with Scotland

Scotland fly-half Finn Russell has taken stock of a monumental rise to the top of the game ahead of the Rugby World Cup.

Russell played a major role as Glasgow Warriors clinched the Pro12 title at the end of last season having made his international breakthrough a few months earlier in the Six Nations.

The 22-year-old was only recently playing in the Scottish Premiership, making his progress all the more impressive.

"The last 12 to 18 months for me have been massive. I think 18 months ago I was almost playing for Ayr and now I've had a few games for Glasgow and Scotland," Russell told STV.

"Winning the Pro12 was brilliant as well – the last 12 months have been amazing."

With nine caps now to his name Russell is battling it out with Ruaridh Jackson and Duncan Weir to make Scotland's final 31-man group for the World Cup in September.

"[The World Cup] is seven weeks away, it's not long, but at the same time there is a lot of work to go in," added Russell.

"I've really thought too much about the first games or anything like that – I've got to get my place in the squad first.

"And with Ruaridh and Duncy being back in there is everything to fight for."
