County cricket: Hampshire v Middlesex, Somerset v Essex and more – as it happened

All the action from around the grounds on another belting day of County Championship action

Apologies for the radio silence ATL, have been busy with deadlines for the paper. Carberry batted beautifully today, and my report is on its way.

Just having a nosey around the other game, I see that Pattinson has taken two wickets but Notts will have to bat again at Durham, while Bressie went late in the day to Barker. Still, that’s a substantial lead for the Yorkies already. Decisive late wicket for Lancashire, too? Hearing rumours of rain in the capital tomorrow but as yet unsubstantiated.

Related: Hampshire’s Michael Carberry leads by composed example against Middlesex

Same old Bresnan.

.@YorkshireCCC lead by 100 at 278-5 in the 84th over. @timbresnan 61 and @AdilRashid03 29.

Essex have made it to the close 10 without loss chasing 255 against Somerset. Two bats in a day for Ali Cook.

Weird situation here; Finn has rapped Abbott on the hand and it’s popped up to gully where Robson appears to have dropped it! It’s gone in and straight out again - the simplest of chances. How odd.

Wicket! Finn’s returned to the attack and with his second ball he’s got Ervine playing on! Bit close to cut, I reckon. Stumps SCATTERED. Carberry has 83, and he’s been joined by Kyle Abbott, who is in as nightwatchman. 206 for four.

Course he does.

Bresnan has his fifty off 82 balls, 10-x4s included. @YorkshireCCC close to a second batting point at 246-5 in the 79th over.

A batting point for Hampshire and 50 for Ervine as he flicks Rayner over the legside for four. 201 for three, Carberry has 81.

Oh wow!

@SammieHain! #YouBears #ProperCricket pic.twitter.com/KyiX8hkMUB

Somerset’s innings is finally over... Do not plan to visit Taunton on Monday. Wagner’s ended up with six.

ALL OUT: Craig Overton is caught at third man off Wagner for 22. Excellent last wicket partnership of 50. Essex need 255 to win#SOMvESS

45 the last wicket stand at Taunton. Huge in the context of a low-scoring game from Leach and Coverton.

Josh Tongue - what a name - has a couple of Glammy wickets, and they are still well behind.

Handy game from Jordan Clark.

WICKET: Stoneman LBW Clark 40. Surrey 67/1

150 up for Hants as Carbs cuts Murtagh for four. And later in the over he has swivel-pulled the monkeys out of one and it’s gone for six! He’s onto 69.

Crook goes, and Northants are making a bit of a mess of things. Max Holden, on loan from the champions, has 0 off 20. Respect. They are seven down and 114 behind.

.@carbs646 Take a look at the moment @carbs646 reaches his fifty with a well-timed cut before then raising his bat.& pic.twitter.com/ucs2LQSApG

Now this is a tasty game at Taunton.

WICKET Neil Wagner claims his 5th wicket when Jamie Overton hooks and skies to Adam Wheater. Departs for 2. Somerset 124-9. #SOMvESS

Happy news! Michael Carberry has 50! He’s cut Rayner to the point fence and it’s been a fine, patient dig in. 154 balls, eight fours. Now kick on, son.

Fletcher in on the act with the ball now - he’s got Richardson and Durham are 28 for three.

Heady times: Glamorgan are 47 without loss!

Tim Bresnan is off the mark for the season after a pair against Ageas World XI.

Ahhhh ....

️ in the air at the Ageas... pic.twitter.com/S6xKOe4MIf

A wicket at Edgbaston, with Ballance the victim of a bit of uneven bounce.

And at Hove, where Sussex are all out for 291 - a deficit of just 13. Tea finally taken there.

On the way back out at Ageas.

No wickets in the ten overs before the Tea break and @surreycricket are 27/0, in reply to 470.

Love that it took nine overs of captaincy for Livingstone to bring himself on.

No wickets in the ten overs before the Tea break and @surreycricket are 27/0, in reply to 470.

From Hove:

Jofra Archer's driving inside out and hooking off his nose, but even he can't take the glory away from Ben Brown: 89*, bossing things.

Trego out soon after tea at Taunton - Wagner done the trick. 110 for six. Lead 190.

So Leicestershire have got off to a poor start in response to Gloucestershire’s 466; they are 14 for three. Payne train has two and Norwell one.

Well isn’t that a very late tea. Although think they’re making up for lost overs from yesterday.

A really solid half hour from the openers there as we go to tea on 27/0, Burns 4*, Stoneman 23* pic.twitter.com/gc2nz5kPNW

Stuart who?

WICKET: Burnham is caught behind for just 4 runs leaving Durham 8/2 and trailing by 135. #DurvNotts pic.twitter.com/z5torIu7KP

It’s now rather sunny here at the Ageas, and it’s going to need to be because we’ll be playing until 6.30 at the very earliest.

Tea delayed at Hove where Sussex’s fightback is real. They are 266 for nine, with Jofra on 44 and Brown 81. Shaping up to be a brilliant game; Kent’s lead is now just 38.

Speaking of Kent, Sam Billings is batting in the IPL, if that’s your bag.

At tea Somerset are 108-5, a lead of 188. As on the first day the mega-tattooed Trego is at the crease and much rests with him – yesterday he departed immediately after the interval. I still think batsmen have underperformed in this match rather than being betrayed by the surface.

There has been just one fifty so far – from Alastair Cook. Yet not many batsmen can feel betrayed by the pitch. It offers some turn – which is a good thing – but in this innings just the one wicket has fallen to a spinner so far. Jamie Porter has impressed again; Ravi Bopara found some swing and Wagner has been banging the ball into the middle of the pitch. It may be that this day ends as it started with Cook at the crease.

Yorkshire 165 for three at tea. Their noses are very nearly in front.

And that’s tea at the Ageas - with a wicket final ball of the session! Rayner’s the man again and Dawson doesn’t think he’s hit this. Finger’s gone up for caught behind - he was propping forward. Rayner has had a very fine session, with two vital wickets at important times, as well as a fine catch to dismiss Vince.

Durham are one down already. Ball taking Stephen Cook’s wicket to complete a tough debut’s batting for him. 0 for 1 at the end of the first. Just James Pattinson at the other end.

Somerset take tea 108 for five, with Trego and Grego at the crease. Lead is 188.

Because of Toby Roland-Jones’s run-up, we are still four overs from tea while they are having it everywhere else.

Brown has 67 now. Helluva cricketer.

Sussex trailing by just the 65 runs, now that Archer has hit 31 from 30 balls. Him and Ben Brown are now at a partnership of 48. #GOSBTS

Scathing from the man from BBC Northampton.

A few very much avoidable dismissals for @NorthantsCCC sees them slide from 101/0 to 136/4. Not ruthless enough #bbccricket

Busy day down at Taunton, where Somerset are teetering at 101 for five. Davies gone now. 12 and 11 in his first match for the county.

I know I'm sad, but I do love that Leaning and Ballance are in the middle together. #countycricketlive

So, Notts all out for 305, with Pattinson gone for 59 and Gurney inevitably not lasting long. Decent lead and it’s tea there. Ball and Pattinson will be looking forward to getting back out, you’d think. Very similar pattern to their first game, Notts, with lower order piling up a decent lead after dodgy top order effort.

We have a funny situation here. Roland-Jones has come back for the first over of a new spell. Carberry has turned one into the legside but there’s an appeal for leg before, which RoJo turns to the umpire to bellow. In the process of running his single, Carberry has clattered into RoJo and immediately chucked his bat on the ground with a sore hand. He’s on his haunches, but after five minutes of inspection from the phys he’s been cleared to carry on. 104 for two; Dawson looking in good nick.

Lancashire all out for 470. What an extraordinary comeback that is.

Gloucestershire have the honour of first first-innings declaration of Championship season: 466 for 8. I'm here all day #countycricketlive

An early tea break at Cardiff. When will this game end, then?

TEA// Last wicket falls as Hastings is caught by Rudolph off the bowling of de Lange. @WorcsCCC all out for 403. pic.twitter.com/x7fUq4XLKF

Sussex nine down now, Kent looking at a lead of 100+ on first innings.

Two quick wickets for Shiv Thakor – Duckett then Wakely. Northants 105 for two.

Big wicket for Warwickshire.

OUT! Handscomb b Wright, 75. Bowled through the gate, maybe off inside-edge, driving. 132-3 in the 39th.

Oh no.

Eight runs away from your maiden first-class ton & this happens... #DURvNOT pic.twitter.com/OwRgdrgd0U

Oh no! Fletch has been run out for 92 at Durham. Pattinson ploughs on - he’s 40 now. Proper batsman.

Wicket!

Franklin’s brought himself on for a jam roll and he’s got Vince! I’m going to shock you here and tell you that James Vince has had a waft at a drive and been caught at second slip. Very good take by Rayner. 70 for two and Dawson in, with Rossouw now down to bat seven.

Well Rayner’s got the first wicket! Jimmy Adams gone, caught at slip for 34. It’s 57 for one.

Ollie Rayner on to bowl wearing sunnies and a sleeveless cable-knit. Classy look, that.

Somehow I failed to include this lovely snap from Guy. He has his wish...

Greetings from The Oval @willis_macp where the sun's out & we're hoping for wickets. I love Shiv, but not THAT much. It's good to be back. pic.twitter.com/vXqCiDpXhE

All very well, lads, but the lead is massive.

WICKET! Barnard falls for 59, LBW to de Lange. @WorcsCCC now 349/8 @TheSSESWALEC #GoGlam #GLAvWOR pic.twitter.com/XsUoIsqf9z

Footitt has now taken five wicket hauls in his last five Championship matches.

And there’s five for Footitt!

WICKET: Jarvis c Foakes b Footitt 0. @LancsCCC 407/9

An eighth for Surrey and a fourth for Footitt. Parry gone for 21 caught by Foakes but Shiv still there. You sense that when the score was 67 for five, Surrey didn’t think they’d have to wait until now to get the eighth ... 407-8.

Wiese Debit for his first knock of the season.

WICKET: Delray ends his first-class debut on 22 after being caught by Gidman. Wiese the next man in. #GOSBTS

Mustard gone at Bristol, to Dexter. 372 for six, the Glosters.

Well I went for a little post-lunch perambulation and while not much is happening here, plenty is going on elsewhere. Somerset bowled Essex out for 129, while Kent have Sussex six down.

Here’s another nudge for Ali’s piece on Durham from yesterday.

Related: Durham put on brave face but are still haunted by last season’s nightmare | Ali Martin

Players back out at the Ageas Bowl. Dial M for Murtagh to continue.

A gift for Lancashire fans.

Full highlights of the first session today against @LancsCCC. A wicket and lots of hard yards for our bowlers... pic.twitter.com/9LHkG9d7pZ

Fans of young English cricketers will be pleased to know that Mason Crane and Tom Alsop are spending the lunch break having a net.

You may remember how I informed you yesterday that Somerset’s score was around 100 under par. Well, I could stubbornly stick by that but the simple maths here suggests otherwise. At lunch Essex are 121-8, still 88 runs behind.

The wickets have been shared. Lewis Gregory, much improved after a night’s sleep, accounted for Alastair Cook, who was bowled off a bit of inside edge and pad for 52. Otherwise only Ashar Zaidi has gone beyond 20. The ball is turning a little bit more – though nothing compared to Dhaka four months ago - and Roelof van der Merwe has three victims.

So that’s the end of the first session on the second day. Here are the scores in the nine games.

Division One:

Lunch at the Ageas where Carbs and Adams have safely negotiated the first seven overs from Murtagh and Roland-Jones. 19 without loss.

Fletcher finally has 50...

Only Fletch.

Scoreboard issues here mean Luke Fletcher has been applauded twice for his 50 but he's still on 49! Notts 191-7 lead by 29. #bbccricket

Some wagon wheel, that.

140 - @Clarksy16 posted 140 off 212 balls for @LancsCCC; his previous highest first-class score was 84*. Wheel. pic.twitter.com/EFjo0YOWy2

Another at Taunton; RdvM gets Grievous Bodily Harmer and Essex are 119 for eight.

Textbook response to a dismissal from Evans. Perfectly played.

Here's the Evans dismissal - not so short but Claydon shapes it away from the right-hander. Parnell returns at Sea end 15 mins before lunch. pic.twitter.com/f7P7gcIWc6

A hammy, I’m told. Old man.

We've had a bit of a stoppage where Chanderpaul has received some attention from the physio. He'll continue but with a runner (@vvsprocter).

So Notts are building a lead; it’s great to see Luke Fletcher making such a strong start to the season in Div 2. Tavare out for Glos too.

Really on the move

WICKET: Laurie Evans is caught by Rouse, leaving Sussex on 58 for 5. Skipper Luke Wright is the next man in. #GOSBTS

Kent on the move again.

WICKET! Another smart Gidman slip catch as Claydon finds edge to remove van Zyl for 13. Sussex 58-4 v Kent 304. Evans joins Rawlins 16*. pic.twitter.com/7E8xBpqNyv

Pepsi maxed out

WICKET! After just reaching his 100, Kohler-Cadmore is caught behind off the bowling of Hogan. @WorcsCCC 283/6. pic.twitter.com/tllhIPlKGN

A wicket for Gareth Batty ends Lancashire’s highest seventh wicket stand against Surrey. 243 it was worth, but Batty has got Clark for 140.

Not just too good, but far too good. This one’s for Michael Bates.

GONE!!! Carnage here at Taunton as RVDM is far too good for Wheater, the ball clipping the off-stump!

Essex 91/7!!!#SOMvESS pic.twitter.com/U5prAQtKWj

Tim Murtagh is the only Middlesex player taking the field without a long-sleeved cable-knit. Harder man than me. He’ll be bowling lots though. Experienced duo of Adams and Carberry to open for Ageas World XI.

I think we can all agree that that is really quite out.

WICKET: It's @Brad_wheal who finishes things off, Finn (2) struck on the pad in front of all three - @Middlesex_CCC total 356 first up. & pic.twitter.com/xd0CRhkX2u

Essex, after a very good day yesterday, suddenly in all sorts. Tendo clips Gregory to midwicket - clip to follow - and they are 91 for six.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore is approaching a ton at Cardiff and, five down and with plenty to come (Lloyds Leach!) Worcestershire’s lead is getting really rather hefty. 271 for five.

Quick game a good game at Edgbaston. Good start to the season from Wright.

OUT! @lythy09 gloves Wright short behind down leg-side, 8. @YorkshireCCC 9-1

Wheal raps Finn on the pad, the finger goes up and Middlesex are all out for 356. They will have had designs on many more mid-afternoon yesterday, and Hampshire have done well when a bowler light. But a pretty good total nonetheless, mind, Tricky half hour coming up for the Hampshire openers ... Rossouw will bat but no higher than No7 I reckon, while it would be a surprise to see Edwards wield willow given his hamstring problem.

Nathan Buck has five and Northants have bowled Derbyshire out for 281! Looks to me like they’ve left a few out there. Elsewhere in Div 2, Sussex on the rebuild against Kent and Gloucestershire trudging along against Leics. Tavare has a ton!

Here are the Cook and Bopara wickets at Taunton. Great celebration from Gregory, who is a seriously impressive cricketer.

Here's a look at 2 big wickets for Somerset! Essex still trail by 126 runs#SOMvESS pic.twitter.com/RG3LesjIsa

Two in two balls at the Ageas as Dawson gets Rayner lbw playing across the line! Might have stayed low. 349 for nine.

More Manchester City watch. Hampshire played football this morning, which is fairly hilarious given that Fidel Edwards broke a leg doing just that in the warmup last year.

I always like the idea of footballers having a net before playing 90.

@willis_macp Claudio Bravo's at the Ageas Bowl. "Wow, imagine if we were allowed to use our hands to stop the ball when it comes toward us". pic.twitter.com/01lZRYEq6c

Middlesex settle for three batting points. Hampshire manage just two bowling points. 344 for seven after 110.

Middlesex have just taken 11 from a Wheal over and now need 11 from a Dawson one to get a fourth batting point.

Alastair who?

GONE!!! That's the one we wanted! Cook drags on to Gregory for 52 and Essex are 81/5!!#SOMvESS pic.twitter.com/i96iVPCXCU

A sixth for Durham! Wood gets Blood Wessels and Notts are 132 for six! Pattinson time.

Played.

#ThatMomentWhen you hit your 74th First Class

What.A.Player! @LancsCCC have moved on to 324/6 in the 92nd over.

#RedRoseTogether pic.twitter.com/7rnYiE7W11

No is the answer to my Barker-based question at 11.49. Bresnan into the attack, gets him first ball and Yorkshire are all out for 178.

Dawson to Roland-Jones, who has three overs to get 24 for a fourth batting point. Long-on back.

Keith Barker batted well in the second innings last week and he has a 50 now. Holding Yorkshire right up at Edgbaston. Can he get Warwickshire to their first batting point of the season?

Like the look of this kid Cook - could go a long way.

50 For Alastair Cook from 85 balls with 9x4. Ravi Bopara 8*. 79 for 3. #SOMvESS

Oh that is a lovely stat.

@surreycricket Shiv Chanderpaul (aged 42 yrs, 240 days) is the oldest player to score a f-c 100 since G Gooch 170* Ess v Glam in 1996.

74 first-class tons for Shiv! What an effort this has been from Lancashire. Surrey back down to earth.

YES SHIV! Chanderpaul hits his first @LancsCCC of the season and his 74th First Class ton of his career! Unbelievable.

#RedRoseTogether pic.twitter.com/ni27vrhmO0

So the charge is on. Roland-Jones pulled Abbott for four, straight-driven for two, and now pulled for six more.

Three batting points for Middlesex as Ollie Rayner guides Berg down to third man for four lovely runs. 301 for seven. Will they kick on in search of a fourth? They have six over to get 49 if so ... Marcos Rojo the key man.

This is good stuff from Somerset, although I reckon all the hawkeye stuff really serves to do is show that the ball was going down ...

Here's a closer look at that last wicket with Essex now 69/3 and trailing Somerset by 140 runs#SOMvESS pic.twitter.com/rmepon50Ee

Jeez, Parnell.

New stumps, please! #Clatter pic.twitter.com/a7MrTgNd3u

Another one for Parnell at Hove - nightwatchman Shahzad caught at slip. 25 for three Sussex.

Here’s Man City watch.

Here’s the wicket we had this morning:

WICKET: An early breakthrough on day two, @Kyle_Abbott87 pushing one across Franklin (19) who edges to @vincey14 - @Middlesex_CCC 297-7. pic.twitter.com/0sC3KkzhzZ

And at Hove too! They’re tumbling. There’s a nightwatchman at the other end, so does this mean Delray was down to bat No3? Please say that is the case ...

WICKET: Harry Finch is the first man to go on Day 2, he leaves the field on 15. Delray Rawlins the next man in. #GOSBTS

Two five-fers in two games for CoadBreaker!

OUT! @BenCoad10 takes his fifth wicket, Wright bowled. @WarwickshireCCC are 165-9 in the 54th over.

A wicket at Cardiff.

WICKET! An early wicket for Glamorgan this morning as Cox is caught behind for 42 off Hogan #GoGlam #GLAvWOR pic.twitter.com/WdWP4QKGa0

Wicket!

We had a bit of a delay at the start of this over to change the ball – no idea why – and now Abbott has got Franklin! Great line to the left-hander and he’s just edged to third slip. Safe hands from Vince. Rayner time. Both teams chasing points now - it’s 294 for seven. It’s also the sort of conditions Middlesex really wouldn’t mind a bowl in ... will RoJo be getting on with it? I reckon so.

Dan Lawrence is out for a duck. After all that on Monday, too.

An email from Romeo, of RomeoRomeoTango fame:

Hi Will. Is Rilee Rossouw such a good fielder that he merits two substitutes? From 11.02: ‘Lucky old Mason Crane and Tom Alsop are fielding in his place.’

Samit gone early at the Riverside! c Collingwood b Rushworth! First slip, I imagine. Great start for Durham.

Sounds like Rilee Rossouw will bat lower down. He’s been off the field with a bad hand since dropping Robson on 40, and he’s not come out to field this morning. Lucky old Mason Crane and Tom Alsop are fielding in his place.

Abbott with the first ball of the day, to Franklin.

News on what we should be calling Ben Coad. I prefer CoadBreaker or Morse. The Inspector.

Also good to discover on back of Times that Yorkshire have a good nickname for Ben Coad - "Highway". That or Green Cross I suppose.

As per a BTL request, let’s get the links to the watchable (literally, not in terms of standard - Glamorgan are seldom watchable) games up.

If you’re at Hove (and if you are you’re very lucky) today, why not check out the (warmth of the) Pavilion? I once ate a very nice bacon sandwich in there.

.@CountyChamp @kentcricket Remember today is an open ground for non-members who can enjoy the benefit of viewing today's play from the Pavilion. #GOSBTS

Morning Stuie! I was pleased to see Gloucestershire have a good day yesterday because I was very critical of their spineless second innings at Canterbury last week. Fight there yet.

@willis_macp morning will glos had a good day! Lots of wkts everywhere love the blog every day

Morning to vic too

Here’s a great piece from Ali Martin on his day up at Durham yesterday. Great to see so many people up there supporting them on their first day back.

The really big news is that Manchester City, who play Southampton late this afternoon, are staying at the Ageas Hilton, along with Middlesex. I wonder if they ate in Beefy’s restaurant last night? I have to say, I rather like the idea of, say, David Silva settling down for a steak with, say, Ollie Rayner.

Here’s their bus. Conspicuous.

Looks like Pep and the City boys fancy a bit of Champo action at the Ageas. And who can blame them? pic.twitter.com/Wm0Mfk879R

Good morning! Happy Saturday, and welcome to a rather gloomy Ageas Bowl, where Middlesex and the Ageas World XI are warming up before my very eyes. There’s no sense that we’ll be delayed or anything but it is a reminder that the weather has realigned its setting to April after last week’s early summer loveliness. How lucky we were!

Anyway, there are nine games (yes, for the first time since 99) and here’s the absolute state of them:
