County cricket: Hampshire v Yorkshire and more – as it happened

All the action from around the grounds as Joe Root made just eight on his return to action, with Yorkshire collapsing against Hampshire

What a blooming remarkable day. Yorkshire in strife at the Ageas, Middlesex all over Essex, and Lancashire fighting back. Notts took 17 in the day while 24 fell at Worcester as the hosts made it two in two. And Darren Stevens! Wow, what a man. Anyway, here are the scores and results.

What a mad old game. Lloyds Leach finishes with five.

That’s stumps at Lord’s, where Essex are 120 for four.

I’m giving that.

BROWNE FALLS: Important wicket as Browne is trapped in front by @Ollie2rayner before the close of play! #TopTiming#TeamMiddlesex #MIDvESS pic.twitter.com/SgtFW2XqxQ

Just seen that Rayner got Browne late in the day at Lord’s. What a big wicket that is, and now Roland-Jones has the nightwatchman Porter! Four down, 387 behind are Essex.

Stumps at the Ageas. What a day for Hampshire. Yorkshire are 128 for six. Ballance 63 not out, but his team 327 behind.

Stumps at Canterbury – Kent 242 ahead.

Two overs left in the day here, with Yorkshire 126 for six and 329 behind. Topley and Wheal to bowl them, I reckon.

Off for bad light at Canterbury with Kent 242 ahead and Stevens on 53.

Some ‘ighlights from Edgbaston.

Day 2: Match highlights

Still going.

Darren Stevens reaches his 74th first class 50 off 45 balls (11x4). Kent 120-7, a lead of 220. Rouse 4*. #ProperCricket pic.twitter.com/0Wslgf2awI

Silly good, is Stevens.

Darren Stevens has struck 10 fours in a brisk 46*. Matt Coles 7*. Kent 111-6 & lead of 211. #ProperCricket pic.twitter.com/txmuz3N06r

Surrey close 299 for three with Sanga 98*. They are 33 behind Warks.

Tasty.

WESTLEY WICKET: An absolute beauty from @finnysteve does for Westley! Top stuff Finny #TeamMiddlesex #MIDvESS pic.twitter.com/Cxe172nKZ6

50 for Gary Ballance! Very unfussy from the skipper, he’s been excellent off his pads and in front of and behind point after a shaky start. 103 for six.

Finn has Westley at Lord’s.

Here’s the Bresnan wicket...

WICKET: What a day this man is having! @Bergy646 gets Bresnan (21) to poke at one and he feathers through to @lewis_mcmanus - 94-6. & pic.twitter.com/IS5qMPiHER

Wicket! Berg has four! Bresnan has gone driving, caught behind. Finger took a long while to go up. It’s 94 for six.

Close of play at Old Trafford!

They are way ahead of where we are. Lancs are 152 for two, still 17 behind, with Livi 57 and Davies 78.

Wonder what the Notts lads will be up to tonight?

No better feeling #2daywin

Archer last man out for 47, Patel the bowler. Extraordinary display from Notts, but pretty sorry stuff from Sussex to lose 17 wickets in the day.

Fair enough.

Archer's middle stump goes flying. 192-9. Magoffin is coming out, bad knee or not, and no runner.

Livingstone has his second 50 of the match at Old Trafford. Somerset still 33 in front, though.

Mark Stoneman is out! Easy as 123 for Warwickshire. He’s lbw to Barker about 10 overs before the new ball. 267 for three, Surrey 65 behind.

Northeast goes south

Northeast c Smit b Milnes 11. Kent 49-4 & lead by 149. Stevens joins Gidman 2*.

#STATTAGE

@GeorgeDobell1 Yes, including Somerset 1899 & Glamorgan 1922 who both lost their first 4 by an inns. No team has lost 3 by an inns before end of April.

Wicket! Bairstow gone! Yorkshire are 46 for five, a mere 409 behind. Wheal the wicket-taker this time, with an lbw that struck YJB below the kneeroll, perhaps outside the line. Looked a decent enough shout to me. He was playing across the line...

Nearly ... there.

Wicket for Fletcher, Whittingham caught behind for six. Sussex 171/8 and on the brink, especially if Magoffin doesn't bat.

Topley is getting quicker by the ball. He’s had a big lbw appeal against Bairstow turned down and has beaten him for pace too. Leg slip in for Wheal against Ballance, who is looking good.

Lots of Kumar Sangakkara in here, so you should watch it really.

Second session highlights pic.twitter.com/uJHom2hnCM

I thought Kent were about to do to Derbyshire what they did to Sussex last week. Northeast still there and they bat very deep, but plenty of work to be done.

Denly c Godleman b Davis 6. Kent 38-3 & lead by 138. Gidman joins Northeast 2*.

I jest, but that really is a gorgeous line from Roland-Jones.

COOK IS GONE

COOK IS GONE: Huge wicket for @tobyrj21 as the former @englandcricket skipper edges behind to the safe gloves of @JohnSimpson_88#MIDvESS pic.twitter.com/u1t2ijmMwx

And Luke Wright is gone at Trent Bridge. Already 14 wickets in the day down for Sussex. Soon to be 17.

He’s nicked off to Toby Roland of Jones and Essex are 34 for one.

Northants are 45-3 chasing 185 and all three have been bowled. We are going to lose that and our friends at Trent Bridge today, folks.

A wicket for yer Glosters.

WICKET! Clark (16) feathers to Mustard behind and Craig Miles gets his man. 208/3 #DURvGLO

Brown and Wright put on 50 for Sussex, but the former is gone to big Luke Fletcher, caught by Greg Smith. Notts will win that by an innings today.

Taken a while to get there, but here he is, all gangly and left-arm.

Improbably, there are 29 overs left in the day after this one. The light will not stop play.

WICKET: A deserved scalp for @Kyle_Abbott87 as Handscomb (1) is pinned LBW! What a start from the lads here - @YorkshireCCC 19-4. & pic.twitter.com/eUB9njlF01

Let me catch my breath and reassess here. Yorkshire are 19 for four against Hampshire, who made 455.

Gareth Berg, who made 99 and was not out, took the first three. Lees lbw, although he was furious with the decision, then Lyth lazily playing on and the prize scalp of Root. It left him, and got a touch big, but I suppose he could have left it. Abbott, who is bowling a quite brilliant spell, has had Ballance in knots and Root troubled, then got Peter Handscomb lbw. Bairstow at the crease with Ballance.

WICKET: @Bergy646 is on fire here, claiming his third scalp and it's the @englandcricket skipper no less! Root (8) edges behind - 19-3. pic.twitter.com/6rsWI4dvHw

Hampshire are all over Yorkshire like a bad rash.

99* in the sunshine ☀️ for the iceman @Bergy646 and three wickets - he's on fire @willis_macp #bbccricket pic.twitter.com/46fMUwC6tw

Four! Abbott nips one back at Handscomb and the finger goes up. Could have been high. YJB to the crease.

Berg has his man! Root’s had a fendy waft outside off and been caught behind for eight and Yorkshire are in all sorts at 18 for three.

A fifty for Sangakkara and a hundred for Mark Stoneman. Well done them! Surrey 218 for two.

Here are the two wickets at the Ageas so far.

WICKET: @Bergy646 you beauty! In his first over after striking 99*, Bergy hits Lees infront of all three and its given! 9-1 pic.twitter.com/gDV8xKHcMJ

WICKET: @Bergy646 is at it again! Lyth chops on and the bails go flying - @YorkshireCCC in early trouble at 14-2. & pic.twitter.com/jDhiiPASIu

Jennings goes for 87 to Chris Liddle. 183 for two, are Durham. Graham Clark, fresh from three consecutive tons for the dinky-doos, in at No4.

The quick wickets of Franklin (not many) and Simpson (90) bring about the Middlesex declaration. Work for the East Saxons to do.

More news:

No one say @StuartBroad8 doesn't care about playing for @TrentBridge.Look at this celebration when Pattinson strikes https://t.co/bxiFfrL70J

Right, apologies for briefly disappearing. Filing for first edition, which can be rather tough on a day like this.

The big news is that Berg got a second! Lyth, playing on.

Wicket! Berg gets Lees! Lbw, looked decent enough to me and it’s four for one. Root time?

Sussex in all sorts. Pattinson – what a player.

Pattinson gets another lbw, Nash lbw for 53. He has 20/3, Sussex 83/5 at tea. 209 behind still. Notts to win today?

Players out after tea at the Ageas. Abbott with the new ball. Lyth facing.

Buck gets Tongue after a stand of 45 - the most productive of the innings - and Northants need 185 to win. 48 overs in the day.

Tea at OT.

TEA Day 2: @LancsCCC 2nd inns 51-2 (@aldavies23 23* @liaml4893 17*) trail @SomersetCCC by 118 runs #LANvSOM

Berg’s was a fine innings worthy of a ton. His highest score for Hampshire goes from 99 to 99*. He hasn’t scored a ton since 2011. Hard lines.

Wow. There has been a fair bit of fannying about from Hampshire in this last-wicket stand – they really could have kicked on more – and now Root has dismissed Wheal to leave Berg stranded on 99! He’s edged straight to the first of two slips and Hampshire are all out for 455. That’ll be tea, surely...

Middlesex still going very nicely.

Century stand for the fifth wicket - #TeamMiddlesex 431-4. Eskinazi 88*, Simpson 40*. #batted

Poor shot from van Zyl gives Pattinson a wicket. Sussex three down and battling to save the game.

WOW!!! @KumarSanga2 uppercut six

SPIRIT OF CRICKET:
Wonderful sportsmanship as @JohnSimpson_88 is floored by Wagner, @seskinazi is stranded & @EssexCricket withdraw appeal pic.twitter.com/p23A9dlLJS

Derbyshire nine down...

Palladino c DBD b Coles 5. Bowling change at Nackington Rd end pays off. Davis joins Mendis 4*. Derbyshire 140-9 v Kent 259. #ProperCricket pic.twitter.com/yiHqsrJL4b

At the Ageas Bowl, the sun is out, the pitch is flat and Yorkshire are short on ideas. Berg has 85, having been dropped on 43, and each of the final three wickets have been worth at least 41. This one with Wheal is 52.

That game there at Worcester could be over today, you know. Worcester are leading by 133 with two second innings wickets in hand, and 56 overs in the day.

Lancashire in strife. Gregory a very fine player.

GONE! Second one for Gregory as Proctor is bowled for 4. Lancashire are 23 for 2. #LANvSOM

The Essex twitter account here, lauding an entirely sensible sounding piece of cricket.

Sporting gesture by Essex. Simpson collided with bowler Wagner and could have been run out but Essex declined to appeal. 385-4. #MIDvESS

Wowzer.

Another five-wicket haul for dazzling Darren Stevens! The 15th of his FC career. Hughes caught Rouse for 12. Derbyshire 131-7 #ProperCricket pic.twitter.com/r1EvTNDe9U

Lancashire are still 152 back.

OUT! First wicket falls for Lancashire as Hameed is out, caught Trego, bowled Gregory for 7. Lancashire are 17 for 1. #LANvSOM

Got him! Badger’s gone.

WICKET: Borthwick ct Trott b Clarke 50

127/2

A wicket at Leicester! Harry Dearden, having made runs yesterday, gets his maiden first-class wicket, and it’s a gooden, Jacques Rudolph for 58.

Hundred partnership for Durham’s first wicket and Surrey’s second, I see. Lots of the north-east about Surrey’s, and South Africa about Durham’s.

Trent Bridge stream...

Edgbaston stream...

Fifty for Gareth Berg! 89 balls, five fours.

Wicket! Topley gone for 16. Beats his best by one. Lbw to Rash. 387 for four.

Division Two wickets!

Probing over from Nathan Buck and he removes Joe Clarke for 4. @WorcsCCC now six down, 98 ahead #bbccricket

Another one! Stevens bowls Wilson for 0. Derbyshire 113-5. Hughes joins Madsen 51*. #ProperCricket pic.twitter.com/bMlsvy7Lrt

Durham ticking along nicely.

50 up! A lovely innings from @stephen_cook91 who moves on to 50* from 80 balls and 5x4's. Batted Cooky #DURvGLO pic.twitter.com/aW7AK4HnVH

Topley has 16! He’s batted twice for Hampshire, and both times recorded his highest first-class score. 378 for six and it’s really very dull.

Bat carried. What an effort. And what a lead. Over to you, Has.

The @SomersetCCC innings has come to an end on 278 as Jarvis bowls Groenewald for 20. Elgar carries his bat for 113no. Lead of 169.

Reece Topley has equalled his highest first-class score. 15.

Meanwhile ...

Two down now as Delray Rawlins is caught at third slip off Broad. Sussex 10-2 following on, 282 behind.

Middlesex well placed to get a fifth, you think.

Fourth batting point reached in the 98th over. #TeamMiddlesex 350-4. Eskinazi 49*, Simpson 5*. #batted

I’ve been for some post-lunch perambulation and it’s rather nice here. Sun out, prime batting conditions on the deadest of decks. No more wickets.

There have been elsewhere, though.

@willis_macp late lunches were due to a combination of 9 downs (Sussex & Somerset) and making up time lost yesterday (Worcs, Durham & Debys)

Trail by 292. You’d think they’ll be following on.

Dean Elgar has equalled Lancashire’s score, and the lead is 159.

Elsewhere, bit confused as to why lunch hasn’t been taken at various Div Two grounds. Oh well. Not that important, really.

That was a pretty decent session for Yorkshire. Hants lost 68 for four, including that burst of 3-3, and are 349 for eight. 400 looks about par on a dull track. They haven’t been able to weasel out the last two wickets though, reasonable resistance from the tail.

Here’s the state of the nine games at the luncheon interval. Some, it’s fair to say, a wee bit more advanced than others.

Leicestershire all out for 420. Decent effort. What do Glamorgan have up their sleeves?

What a superb effort that.

Dean Elgar reaches his century from 205 balls, 11x4 with @SomersetCCC 247-9 leading by 138 #LANvSOM

Topley having a bat at No10, which seems a couple of places too high but perhaps he’s improved. Yorkshire take two points, Hampshire three. 346 for eight with ten mins til lunch.

Wicket! And a fairly remarkable run out, all told. Rash bowled a fairly minging ball, to which Berg played a fairly minging sweep, getting a top edge that ran fine. They ran two and came back for a third, but Ballance skuttled down to the fence to collect it, launched in and Bairstow did some very fine work to run out Abbott. He didn’t think he was out, but he is. It’s 346 for eight. Three balls left in point-scoring time...

18 of the things yesterday, but it took 100 minutes for one today. Leach reaches a maiden 50, but Clark has him now. Elgar has 97, and the lead is 132.

Somerset’s lead is now very substantial at Old Trafford. Leach has 48, and Elgar 96... 232 for eight.

Worcestershire are 3-3 and have promoted Duke Hastings to No4 and Joe Leach to No5. What the hell?

Luke Wright has been bowled by Jake Ball, and Sussex are 93 for seven.

Meanwhile, Worcestershire are three for three with Dolly gone to Azharullah. 3-3 there.

Wickets everywhere!

Well, Worcestershire are one down early. Buck’s excellent start to the season continues as he gets Daryl Mitchell. Moeen in at 0-1.

Three points apiece there too.

Well, bowled.

Here's @WayneParnell getting one to go back up the Nackington Rd slope... Derbyshire 4-1 - Darren Stevens opens the bowling at Pavilion end. pic.twitter.com/7WaeME4mEq

Fletcher bowls a heavy ball.

.@lukewright204 being tucked up by @fletcherluke. @izzywestbury @bracecricket pic.twitter.com/BT2cEA1vXY

Ball has got van Zyl now anyway. Notts really are a relentless bunch. I pointed out to the great Jon Culley on twitter that Wright and Broad are best mates from their England and Leicestershire days.

Let off for Luke Wright on three, dropped by Broad at mid-on off Ball, albeit difficult chance diving to his right.

That’s a first innings deficit of 31. Bowled, Woosters.

Wicket! Willey’s gone round the wicket, and wide on the crease, to Dawson and angled one in, a bit quicker. It’s struck him on the back pad, just in line I reckon, he’s late on it and up goes the finger. All of a sudden, Hampshire have lost three for three and it’s 302 for seven. Berg and Abbott in on 0.

Three points apiece at Edgbaston as Tom Curran dismisses OHD. They’ve lost four for not too many this morning and been eaten by the new ball, Warks.

Huge stand in the context of the game, this. Would be one hell of a ton from Elgar.

50 Partnership between Elgar (81*) and Leach (26*). Somerset move onto 195 for 8 with a lead of 86 runs. #LANvSOM pic.twitter.com/5BaHu9Xf1o

A bit of Yorkie-baiting going on over at cricinfo...

Smart move from York's Zim-born, Derbyshire-pilfered captain to keep on Northants' David Willey who removes Hampshire local Lewis McManus.

Coles goes, and Derbyshire have bowled Kent out for 259.

And another at the Ageas! Two bowling points for Yorkshire, and Willey’s first wicket. Bairstow’s taken a tumbling catch to his left to pull of a decent legside strangle, but again the batsman, McManus, doesn’t think he’s hit it.

Shortly after Hampshire brought up their third batting point, Yorkshire have the big breakthrough. Guess who? Yep, it’s Ben Coad, with his fourth of the innings and 22nd of the season. He went slightly wider on the crease, angling it in to Vince, who plays slightly away from his body and edges behind. Inside edge maybe. He didn’t look delighted, but he made 147, so should be. 300 for five.

And Robson is gone at Lord’s! He made 149. Edge through to Wheater off Porter for him.

Woody!

Caught @JetJennings bowled @MAWood33!

Watch all the wickets as they happen ▶️ https://t.co/Spftyqo6GJ pic.twitter.com/i4ponHGnCs

Don’t like hearing this. Anyway, (by virtue of taking the ninth Glos wicket), Durham have moved to minus 42! Wouldn’t a maximum point win be lovely?

INJURY UPDATE: @Colly622 is currently receiving treatment on his hand. #DURvGLO

Kent lose their ninth, Rouse, so Coles – the best No11 in the land? – joins Harris – the best No10 in the land? 240 for nine.

Surrey have taken 19-5 with the new ball ...ball in it's 11th over #bbccricket

Following on by lunch?

Pattinson strikes again as Laurie Evans is caught at 2nd slip. Sussex 35-5 and Pattinson is 4-12.

Nothing like picking up where you left off.

Neil Wagner's first delivery of the day goes for 4 to 3rd man, the next is 4 byes. 263 for 1. Robson 144*, Eskinazi 5* #MIDvESS

Not the brightest shot from Jeetan P. Anyway, the 300 is up. Three batting points for Warks.

You'll have to take our word for it but a good catch from TC, reverse cup in front of his face. Patel goes for a duck!

303/8 pic.twitter.com/tX1g8gB1b2

Duckett goes at Worcester! Northants in a bit of strife at 120 for seven, and still 68 behind.

Lovely news from Lord’s – they’ll be underway in five minutes.

You been Curran’d.

That looked a simple enough decision...

Sussex are four down. Pattinson again doing the business. Delray Rawlins caught behind. 19 for four. :-(

Surrey are on the move. Footitt needs two of the last three to claim a five-bag in six consecutive games...

Delayed starts at Lord’s and Canterbury. The Tropical South letting itself down.

Players out here. Coad, Yorkshire’s new strike bowler, to kick things off.

Anyway, the important business of live streams. As ever, I give these to you in the confidence that you will not close your cc - live! tab. I’ll be very disappointed if you do...

I do not like the look of that.

Hover cover is in position but hopefully only a precaution at this stage... #TeamMiddlesex pic.twitter.com/2eqQui6UTc

I can tell you that James Whitaker spent his Friday absolutely swooning at the state of this bloke’s batting. What a talent. Andy Wilson – formerly of this parish and a very unbiased (genuinely) Lanky – said it was the best innings he’d seen this summer so far. Not bad for a 68.

You want the scoop? You can't handle the scoop!

Well played @liaml4893 pic.twitter.com/92CIsJSoIX

A very fine Saturday morning to you all. I’m Will Macpherson and I’m back at the Ageas Bowl, where Hampshire are in a pretty good spot against Yorkshire. James Vince was lovely yesterday and he’s got his lieutenant Liam Dawson with him against the new ball this morning. Should be a cracking day – weather set fair if not terribly warm – and hopefully we’ll get to see one Joseph Root bat later. Maybe we won’t.

Elsewhere, yesterday was a rather eventful day. Robson and Gubbins made tons for Middlesex against Essex, and Ian Westwood helped Warwickshire to their best day of the season – which is like winning the old tallest dwarf contest – against Surrey. Ian Bell was caught Borthwick bowled Footitt for the third time this season there, too. 18 wickets fell at Old Trafford, where Lancashire are 44 behind, but Liam Livingstone was a genius. In Div Two, there was a quite startling day at Trent Bridge, with Riki Wessels on blooming fire for Notts against Sussex. Here’s yer scores:
